David Gow

It is with great sadness that EMiS (European Movement in Scotland) has learned of the sudden death of David Gow. David was a stalwart of EMiS for many years following his retirement from The Guardian, where he was latterly European Business Editor. At EMiS he brought to bear his deep knowledge of European affairs, European history and Scotland. He also had a journalist’s ability to make the complex simple and to interpret with great clarity the political tides of our time. He was thoughtful, engaging and helpful to many in EMiS and beyond. He was witty, quick and often irreverent.

David had many friends at EMiS. He made a very significant contribution to our standing and authority in Scottish public life, was an ever-dependable adviser, trusted confidante and the best of company. We shall miss him as a friend and as a man in the great Scottish tradition of the democratic intellect.

Our deepest sympathies go to David’s wife Gayle, to his family and to his friends in Scotland, London, Brussels and across the globe.

The European Movement in Scotland is committed to promoting the essential European value of free speech. Consequently, we regularly publish articles by leading academics, journalists and others discussing issues germane to Scotland’s place in Europe. Such articles do not necessarily reflect the views of the European Movement in Scotland.
