Registration is now open for Grassroots for Europe’s next public webinar, talking a week after publication with Peter Foster, author of what may be one of the most important books on Brexit yet to appear, What Went Wrong With Brexit (and What We Can Do About It?) (Canongate, September 7th). Peter is public policy editor of the Financial Times and has led its incisive and acclaimed coverage of Brexit. He’ll talk about his book and its message to Alex Hall Hall, the diplomat and ambassador who resigned in protest at post-Brexit UK government dishonesty, and is now an influential columnist with Byline Times.
A world-leading business, trade and finance journalist, Peter and his colleagues at the FT made earlier this year a 27-minute video on the effects of Brexit which had 5 million views, prompting him to write this book, a comprehensive, detailed and damning survey which has already earned wide acclaim:
“Foster has been a tireless and expert chronicler of Brexit reality even as many of his fellow journalists failed or refused to understand both simple and complex facts” (James O’Brien)
“We are trapped in a desperate corner, argues Foster, with limited options” (Will Hutton)
“Everyone should read this book. Then read it again and memorise it” (Emily Maitlis)
Foster shows in compelling detail the damaging effects our Brexit deal has has on our economy, shows that these they are inevitable, not accidental, and shows how they are set to deepen as UK and EU diverge. Then he shows what remedies and mitigations may be available to UK politicians who commit to retaining our current Brexit red lines.
Foster’s conclusions are challenging and sobering. These improvements are worth having if we can get them, but not enough. They will not “make Brexit work”. Foster does not tell us what we should do, but says that “space is now emerging for a rethink”. Business is restless, industries are at risk, investment is flatlining. It is certainly time for a rethink.
Registration is open and free, donations are welcome to fund future live events.
