The UK-EU relationship: the way ahead

A joint seminar of the Jean Monnet Chair in EU Law at City, University of London and the European & International Analysts Group

The UK-EU relationship since Brexit has been characterised by tension, disputes and disappointments.

Despite signing a Trade and Co-operation Agreement in 2020, the UK and the EU have argued over the Northern Ireland Protocol, fishing licences, the supply of vaccines, the interpretation of trading rules and the treatment of European citizens in the UK (and of UK citizens in some EU countries).

But Britain now has its fifth prime minister since the 2016 referendum. There have been hints of a more co-operative approach from the UK side and a clear willingness to resume dialogue by the EU. In the face of the post-Brexit extraordinary developments of the pandemic, the invasion of Ukraine and the current energy and economic crisis, what should be the agenda to enable the UK and the EU to improve their current relationship?

These questions will be debated by an expert panel chaired by Professor Panos Koutrakos, Professor of EU Law and Jean Monnet Professor of EU Law at City, University of London:

• Dominic Grieve KC, A barrister at Temple Garden Chambers; Attorney General from 2010 to 2014; Member of Parliament for Beaconsfield from 1997 to 2019
