Taking the High Road for Scotland’s Environment Post-Brexit (Yes for EU)

26/04/2022, 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Online event with Yes for EU and Paul McAleavey.

Paul McAleavey has spent almost 30 years working for the European Union, in senior positions in the field of environment at the European Commission in Brussels and at the European Environment Agency in Copenhagen. He is currently adviser at the Joint Research Centre, the science and knowledge service for policy-making at the European Commission.

Paul also sits as a Board member on Environmental Standards Scotland, the independent body set up by the Scottish Parliament post-Brexit to ensure the effectiveness of environmental law and prevent enforcement gaps arising from the UK leaving the European Union.

He’ll be speaking about:

  • What EU environmental standards are and why they are important, not just for the planet & people, but also for the future of our modern economies;
  • Why Scotland must ensure that it maintains and matches progress in environmental protections with the EU post-Brexit – apart from being beneficial in its own right, how “keeping pace” would be essential for re-joining the European Union;
  • How Scotland, through the EU Continuity Act (2020) and the work of Environmental Standards Scotland, can work towards the goal of keeping pace with the EU, and the efforts that are currently being made;
  • Opportunities and threats on the road ahead.
