UK’s longest serving MEP, set to become new EMiS President

Following the recent news that former SNP Minister Michael Russell was to step down from his honorary position as the President of the European Movement in Scotland (EMiS) ahead of taking on another high-profile role in public life, EMiS are delighted to announce that our new President will be David Martin, the former Labour MEP, who served in the European Parliament for 35 years from 1984 until 2019.

Commenting on his new role Mr Martin said “I am delighted to take up this post and to have the opportunity to work with the European Movement in Scotland’s dedicated membership. Scotland belongs in the E.U. and I do not believe the question is if we will re-join but rather when and how. I want to work to with the Executive and members of EMS to make sure it is sooner rather than later. In the meantime, we must continue to keep the European dream alive.”

EMiS Chair, David Clarke, added “David’s European credentials are impeccable, he has unmatched experience and contacts throughout Europe that will contribute hugely to the important task of easing our way towards rejoining the EU.”
