In their first week, our new Prime Minister will face the biggest cost of living crisis for generations. They face a possible recession and trade deadlock with our neighbours. They face a war in Europe, the scale of which we have not seen in 77 years.
So, we must ask what will our new Prime Minister do first to address the cacophony of crises our country faces?
We can tell you – both candidates have committed to progressing with the Northern Ireland Protocol Bill and by doing so threaten a trade war with Europe.
It will go back on the Government’s own deal with the EU by unilaterally scrapping parts of the Northern Ireland Protocol.
This has already led the EU to take legal action against the UK for breaching international law. It could lead to a trade war with Europe.
We need you to send a clear message to Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak. On Day one, they need to commit to doing everything in their power to stop a trade war and work with our European neighbours.
The protocol is far from perfect, but it prevents a hard border on the island of Ireland and allows for the free movement of people and goods. It is crucial in maintaining the Good Friday Agreement and with it the peace, stability, and prosperity in Northern Ireland.
Neither Liz Truss nor Rishi Sunak is willing to admit that ultimately the Good Friday Agreement and Brexit are incompatible.
Over 22,000 of you have already demanded that this government put a stop to this posturing and admit that Brexit has failed.
Reneging on an international agreement will damage our reputation, create uncertainty, and could deter much-needed investment in Britain and especially in Northern Ireland. A trade war with Europe would cost us dearly, at a time when we already face the biggest cost-of-living crisis in the UK for over 40 years.
Sign our call to stop this posturing, that could lead to a trade war with Europe. To rethink their legislation on the Northern Ireland Protocol and put peace and prosperity before internal party politics.
