Dr Mike Galsworthy will be in the chair. \nMore on the speakers  \nGavin Esler is a journalist\, television presenter and author who was a main presenter on BBC Two’s\, Newsnight\, from January 2003 until January 2014\, and presenter of BBC News at Five on the BBC News Channel. Since 2014 he has served as the Chancellor of the University of Kent. In September 2023\, Gavin released his latest book – Britain Is Better Than This: Why a Great Country is Failing Us All. \nGina Miller is a business owner and legal campaigner who initiated the 2016 R (Miller) v Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union court case against the British government over its authority to implement Brexit without approval from Parliament. DESCRIPTION:Webinar and panel discussion hosted by London4Europe.\n\nSpeaker: Nigel Haigh\, OBE\n\nNigel Haigh is an Honorary Fellow of the Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP)\, and was its Director from 1980 to 1998.\n\nIn his presentation\, Nigel will outline the history of the involvement of the EU in environmental matters\, and the consequences on UK environmental policy of the 2016 referendum result. It is suggested that the biggest long term impact of Brexit concerning environmental policy will be to weaken the UK’s influence on global environmental issues\, which will be most important in the coming decades. Nigel will explain that environmental policy is at the centre of the EU – and not just climate change. It is also a popular subject with the public. He will argue that the European Movement would do well to pay more attention to environmental policy as a way of attracting members. Finally\, he will outline some steps that an incoming Government could take to bring the UK closer to the EU.\n\nNigel Haigh’s presentation will be followed by a panel discussion\, including Klajdi Selimi\, President of the Young European Movement; and Michael Nicholson\, Head of UK Environmental Policy\, IEEP UK. DESCRIPTION:Online event hosted by North Herts for Europe\, with Nick Tyrone. \nNick Tyrone is a journalist\, novelist and writer who has published articles in The Spectator\, Daily Express\, The Independent and New Statesman. He has written several books including Dead Idol\, Apocalypse Delayed: Why the Left is Still in Trouble\, and Politics is Murder. He was the Director of Operations and Finance as well as Treasurer of the Yes to Fairer Votes campaign that in May 2011 sought to change the UK voting system. For a period\, he was the Executive Director of Centreforum\, the think tank most known for the book The Orange Book: Reclaiming Liberalism\, which later became the Education Policy Institute. He left to join the pro-European thinktank British Influence in the wake of the Brexit referendum in 2016. He was a member of the Liberal Democrats from 2008 to 2016\, and is currently an Associate Fellow at the think tank Bright Blue\, which advocates for one nation conservative ideas and policies. \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Freedom of movement: the key to rejoin
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nWhy is Freedom of Movement so important? \nHow do we explain this to our fellow citizens? \nMutual Freedom of Movement is the gateway to rejoining the EU. Freedom of movement of people (along with free movement of goods\, services\, and capital)\, is a fundamental principle of the EU Single Market. There can be no return to the Single Market or the EU without FoM. Any campaign to rejoin the Single Market or the EU must convince the government to embrace the return of FoM. But FoM is currently rejected by both Conservatives and Labour\, who say that FoM of people has been abolished “once and for all”. \nOpposition to FoM is based on a mistaken belief that FoM means uncontrolled immigration. The public is not well informed on this issue\, a factor which greatly assisted the leave campaign. People are now becoming more aware that ending FoM affects their own and their families’ choices\, as well as undermining the UK economy\, impacting the workforce in key industries\, impeding business travel and decimating the arts. FoM is strongly supported by the public in all EU member states. \nThe aim of this webinar is to equip pro-EU activists for a campaign to restore FoM\, and so open the door to Single Market and EU membership. We will cover three strands of the campaign: debunking myths\, a positive narrative\, and the dos and don’ts of persuasive communicating. \nThe webinar will provide the basis for a crib sheet for FoM campaigners.

DESCRIPTION:The EU faces multiple challenges\, both internally and externally\, so what does its future hold and is it still the right answer after the watershed? \n\n\nThe European Union has been going through enormous changes. Driven by the Permacrisis – an extended period of insecurity and instability – fundamental transformations in technology\, sustainability and demography and the watershed moment of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine\, security\, particularly economic security\, is now firmly back on the agenda. \n\n\nThe EU will have to continue to change and adapt to address this triple challenge. But this must happen in the difficult context of both internal and external fragmentation and polarisation. \n\n\nWhat does this imply for the future of the EU? Is the EU moving from being a community of values enshrined in law to a confederation of interest driven by Realpolitik? And is the EU still the right answer to today’s changed environment? \n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr Fabian Zuleeg\n\n\n\n\nSPEAKER \n\n\nDr Fabian Zuleeg\n\n\nChief Executive\, European Policy Centre \n\n\nSince October 2013\, Dr Fabian Zuleeg has been Chief Executive of the European Policy Centre\, with overall responsibility\, including providing strategic direction\, managing its staff and resources and representing the EPC. He remains Chief Economist. Fabian holds a PhD from Edinburgh University and has worked in academia\, the public and the private sector. He focuses on the future of European integration and how Europe can meet the triple challenge of the watershed of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine\, the fundamental transformations and the Permacrisis. He coined this term with EPC colleagues in 2021 in the context of internal political dis-cohesion and a contested global landscape. Paul has over two decades of experience in energy\, energy security climate policy and research. Prior to founding Enoda\, Paul was Tellimer‘s Chief Strategy Officer\, CEO of 4Cast-RGE\, and Managing Director and co-Founder of Country Insights. Paul began working on energy system stability issues when he served as the First Energy Security Adviser to the US European Command of the US Department of Defense\, where he led development of the US military’s strategy for energy security in Europe\, Africa\, and Eurasia. Paul was the most senior Defense Department energy security official based in Europe and represented the US both at NATO\, and with senior government and corporate stakeholders in Europe and the US. Paul subsequently became advisor on energy security to the UK Parliament’s Energy and Climate Change Select Committee. Paul helped to design the ground-breaking Oil Shockwave simulations with Securing America’s Future Energy\, which were recognised in President Obama’s 2013 State of the Union address. Paul also served as Deputy Political Analyst in the scenario planning group at Royal Dutch/Shell. Paul is a regular keynote speaker and author on topics in energy\, technology\, and policy. Paul co-authored Chain Reaction: How Blockchain Will Transform the Developing World\, published in 2021 by Palgrave Macmillan\, and Carbon Scenarios\, published in 2008 as a project of the Stockholm Network. Paul was a Marshall Scholar at Oxford University and is also an alumnus of London Business School and the University of Texas at Austin\, where Paul was a National Merit Scholar. \nDr Carl Wright is Secretary-General Emeritus of the CLGF Commonwealth Local Government Forum\, which Carl founded in 1995 and oversaw until 2016. Carl was Assistant Director (1988-94) at the Commonwealth Secretariatdealing with Commonwealth programmes for South Africa\, Namibia and Mozambique. Carl was previously a senior official at the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions and the first Director (1974-88) of the Commonwealth Trade Union Council. In 1973 Carl was among the first UK nationals employed at the European Commission. Carl chairs the Canterbury Climate Action Partnership and led official delegations at both the COP26and COP27. Carl is author of Global Citizen: Grass Roots Activism and High Diplomacy (Hansib Publications\, 2022). Carl studied European Politics at the University of Reading\, and Regional Economic and Urban Planning at the University College London. \nChair: Dirk Hazell graduated form the University of Cambridge and qualified as a barrister. Dirk wrote what became the template for the European Communities’ 1992 single market programme. Dirk led the euro-capital market through the first wave of EU sectoral legislation and then the environmental services sector through the Sixth Environment Action Programme. Dirk chaired the Conservative Party’s Foreign Affairs Forum and London Region\, but left the party when it left the mainstream centre-right EPP European People’s Party. In 2012\, Dirk co-founded the UK EPP which he now leads.
