SUMMARY:Punching Above its Weight: Ireland in the EU
DESCRIPTION:How did a small country like Ireland achieve such prominence in the European Union?\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nIreland joined the European Union in the same year (1973) as the UK but their paths have diverged enormously since then. The UK has left the EU but Ireland has not only stayed but seen its influence in Brussels grow exponentially in recent years\, with Irish figures occupying key leadership roles in the Eurogroup of finance ministers\, European Commission\, EMA\, and elsewhere. \nHow did a small country like Ireland achieve such prominence? What benefits has it drawn from EU membership? Are there any downsides? \nSpeakers: \n\n\n\nPat Cox\, now a private/public sector executive focusing on sustainability/green energy issues\, is a former President of the European Parliament and a Fine Gael TD in Dublin. He won the prestigious Charlemagne Prize in 2004 for his work in promoting EU enlargement and greater democracy.\nBrigid Laffan\, Irish political scientist\, Director of the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies at the European University Institute\, Florence\nTony Connelly\, Europe Editor for RTE since 2011\n\n\n\nChair: David Clarke\, EMiS vice-chair\, Irish “New Scot”\, journalist\, consultant\, and founder of the Scottish-Irish Finance Initiative \n  \nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Stories of Brexit - Action Day (EMUK)
DESCRIPTION:This Brexit deal has hit our people\, our communities\, and our economy hard. People like Willa\, the businesswoman worried about future trade with Europe; Andrew\, the farmer worried about his farm; and Sophia\, a classical musician unable to ply her trade. If we want to turn the tide and start building back what we lost\, now is the time to start making some noise.  \nThe European Movement UK are asking you to join them on Friday 21st May 2021 for their online day of action to help make these changes a reality. \nHave a virtual cup of coffee and a conversation with your MP. Tell your representative the story of one of the 10 people in our report\, or even better tell your own story or the story of someone in your community. Ask your MP to champion the changes recommended in our report to improve the lives of people across the UK post-Brexit. \nMore info here.

SUMMARY:Protecting EU citizens' rights post-Brexit (IfG)
DESCRIPTION:Protecting EU citizens’ rights after Brexit: the view from the Independent Monitoring Authority\nAn online debate organised by the Institute for Government (IfG). \n\n\n  \nThe future of EU citizens living in the UK was one of the big sticking points of the Brexit talks. What are its concerns? What progress has been made and what are the key challenges ahead? \nJoin the IfG for a panel discussion with Q&A. \nMore details and registration here.

SUMMARY:European Pillar of Social Rights
DESCRIPTION:The next episode in the Social Europe Talk series\, supported by the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung\, takes place on Tuesday\, May 4th at 14.00-15.00 CET\, in the run-up to the Social Summit in Porto three days later. \nTo enjoy the debate live\, use the link to Zoom or to YouTube. \nNow that the European Pillar of Social Rights\, launched in 2017\, has been translated into an Action Plan\, we explore with key players how to realise a Europe inclusive of all. Can the decades of dominance of ‘negative’ market integration really be displaced by a positive\, social-policy focus\, when this has conventionally been conceived as the prerogative of the member states? Could there be agreement on the goal of a social-investment or a social-ecological state at the European level? Is the focus in the Action Plan on targets\, monitoring and funding right\, rather than on the social outcomes sought and the programmes—such as a Europe-wide unemployment-reinsurance scheme—needed to achieve them? And can all of this be done without European macro-economic governance and much greater fiscal capacity? \nAround the virtual table will be: \n\nJosé António Vieira da Silva\, organiser of the Porto Social Summit and former Portuguese minister of employment\nAgnes Jongerius\, Socialists & Democrats member of the European Parliament committee on employment and social affairs\nSandra Pereira\, The Left vice-chair of the European Parliament committee on employment and social affairs\nAndreas Botsch\, director of the International Department\, DGB (German Trade Union Confederation)\n\nThe moderator will be Robin Wilson\, acting editor-in-chief\, Social Europe.
