SUMMARY:Life without Erasmus: Responses from the 4 Nations
DESCRIPTION:Schools\, further education colleges and universities are on hols but\, when they return\, a further damaging effect of leaving the EU will hit them: we are no longer part of Erasmus\, the world’s most successful educational exchange scheme. Instead\, we’re being offered a very tepid\, diminished scheme named after Alan Turing. \nBut Erasmus is in fact Erasmus-Plus\, a €26bn scheme that extends more and more to youth as a whole\, including the most deprived\, so workers\, apprentices\, sports men and women et al can take part. To highlight how much we’re losing\, an ad hoc group around Grassroots for Europe is organising a special webinar\, Life without Erasmus\, on July 14 with representatives from the four nations discussing the way forward. So far\, the EU has turned down Scottish requests to re-join Erasmus-Plus but the campaign continues. \nRegister for the July 14 event\, which includes EMiS executive member David Gow\, here. \n

SUMMARY:Brexit Referendum: Five Years On (IfG)
DESCRIPTION:Panel discussion hosted by the Institute for Government\, looking at the impact of the referendum on the governance of the UK and at the meaning of Brexit for the future of the union. \nThe vote to leave the European Union on 23 June 2016 marked the start of a tumultuous period in British politics. The government was set on a collision course with parliament over what Brexit really meant. The civil service began to untangle 43 years of EU membership\, building up new capabilities and preparing for new responsibilities. And the Brexit effect placed the United Kingdom under huge strain – with growing support for independence in Scotland and a new border in the Irish Sea. \nWhat impact has the referendum had on the governance of the UK? Has control really returned to parliament\, or to the government? And what does Brexit mean for the future of the union? \n  \nSpeakers: \n\nLuke Graham\, former MP for Ochil and South Perthshire\, 2017-19 and former head of the Union Unit in No10\nLord McDonald of Salford\, former Permanent Under-Secretary at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office\, 2015-20\nLisa O’Carroll\, Brexit Correspondent at The Guardian \n\nChair: Maddy Thimont Jack\, Associate Director at the Institute for Government \n  \nMore details and registration here. \n  \n

SUMMARY:The future of the multilateral\, rule-based international order (The Federal Trust et al.)
DESCRIPTION:Webinar organised by The Federal Trust for Education & Research\, Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung and Global Policy Institute. \n75 years after the multilateral international order was established through the foundation of the United Nations\, it is now facing major challenges. Topics for discussion will be: How can multilateralism adapt to the new challenges and ensure its relevance in the future global system? Will the arrival of Biden’s US administration herald a change in the US’s commitment to the multilateral institutions? What role should and will China play in the rule-based system? \nSpeakers: \n\nDr Olaf Wientzek\, Director\, Multilateral Dialogue Geneva\, Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung\nVelina Tchakarova\, Director\, Austrian Institute for European and Security Policy (AIES)\, Vienna\nDr Zachary Paikin\, Researcher at the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS); Nonresident Research Fellow with the Institute for Peace & Diplomacy in Toronto; Senior Visiting Fellow\, Global Policy Institute\n\nMore details and registration here.
