SUMMARY:EMiS webinar: German elections and Europe
DESCRIPTION:Germany goes to the polls on Sunday September 26 after 16 years of Angela Merkel as Chancellor and\, arguably\, the most powerful European leader. \nWhatever the election outcome there will be a new Chancellor. But\, as the most populous country and biggest economy in the EU\, the change of leadership and government in Germany will have huge impact on the EU. \nWe will be examining the outcome and the implications for Europe three days after the election\, on September 29\, at 1700\, with a stellar German cast: \nJoining us are: \n\nAndreas Botsch\, head of the international department\, the DGB (German TUC)\, for the SPD\nDr Rainer Ohler\, partner consultant nat Senior Strategists\, ex-head of corporate communications\, EADS/Airbus and foreign policy adviser to Helmut Kohl\, for the CDU\nDr Nils Redeker\, Policy Fellow for European Economic Policy at the Jacques Delors Centre;\nGerman Green MEP (TBC).\n\nThe webinar will be chaired by David Gow\, ex-German Correspondent\, The Guardian\, and EMiS executive committee member. \nPlease register at this link: \nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/german-elections-implications-for-europe-webinar-tickets-171288136427 \nThe ECFR commissioned a poll on the Post-Merkel era and here is a guide to findings: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBEYOND MERKELISM: WHAT EUROPEANS EXPECT OF POST-ELECTION GERMANY\nby Piotr Buras and Jana Puglierin \nKey data insights: \nMerkel built public support for German leadership within the EU \n\nAsked a hypothetical question about who they would vote for as ‘president of the EU’ if Merkel and Macron were the only candidates\, significant pluralities in all countries (including France) point to the chancellor.\nMore Europeans believe that without Merkel\, there would have been more conflict in the world rather than less.\nA plurality of Europeans said they trust Germany on economic and financial policy (36%)\, and to stand up for democracy and human rights (35%) on behalf of the bloc.\n\nBerlin’s credibility\, as a potential leader in geopolitics\, is markedly low across Europe: \n\nJust one in five citizens believe Germany can lead the bloc in its relations with Russia\, and even fewer think Berlin can defend EU interests when dealing with China.\n\nGerman citizens are also yet to be persuaded that their country should play a greater role within the EU: \n\nOnly on standing up for democracy and human rights do more than a third of respondents (38%) believe Berlin can defend European interests.\nA majority (52%) of Germans now think that their country’s “golden age” is in the past\, meanwhile 36% of Germans\, expect their country’s leadership to become more focused on helping other Europeans.\n\nMark Leonard\nDirector\nEuropean Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR)\nUnter den Linden 17\, 10117 Berlin\, Germany\n4th Floor\, Tennyson House\, 159-165 Great Portland Street\, London\, W1W 5PA\, UK\nmark.leonard@ecfr.eu | www.ecfr.eu | @markhleonard | @ECFR \n \n  \n  \n  \n \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEuropean Council on Foreign Relations\nUnter den Linden 17\n10117 Berlin\nGermany \nEmail: communications@ecfr.eu \nTo opt out of ALL email communication from ECFR mailings please click HERE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:UK/EU future relations: challenges for the cultural sector
DESCRIPTION:#ParliamentsInDialogue \n  \nWebinar “UK/EU future relationship – Challenges for the cultural sector” – Wednesday\, 8th September \n  \nThe cultural sector has been one of the most vocal about the impact of the UK’s withdrawal from the European Union\, and the effects on creatives and industry as regards the future relationship. \n  \nThis event will examine the challenges faced by the cultural sector/creative industries in the post-BREXIT environment and how Parliaments and stakeholders can work together to find solutions. \n  \nJOIN US (European Parliament) and our excellent panel on Wednesday\, September 8th at 10.00am BST (11h00 CET) for an interesting online discussion. \n  \nSPEAKERS: \nØ  Sabine VERHEYEN MEP Chair\, Culture and Education Committee\, European Parliament; \nØ  Julian KNIGHT MP Chair\, Digital\, Culture\, Media and Sport Committee\, House of Commons \nØ  Howard GOODALL CBE Composer\, Musical historian and broadcaster and Ambassador for ‘Carry on touring’ \n  \nMODERATOR: \nØ  Rosie GOLDSMITH Journalist\, writer\, presenter and director of the European Literature Network \nLoss of freedom of movement is perhaps the most striking effect of BREXIT for the sector as creatives have gone from enjoying  visa-free travel to having to deal with 27 different systems\, making touring for artists\, singers\, musicians\, orchestras and stage  productions as well as transport of materials much more difficult. For example\, a House of Commons survey reveals that over 80% of musicians think that touring in Europe will not be financially viable\, with 60%answering that they are considering leaving the profession. \nAnother major impact might be the loss of access to the EU’s arts\, culture and media funding programmes such as Creative Europe. Access to other funding streams like Erasmus+ and Structural funding will also no doubt have a direct or indirect impact. \nEqually important is the loss of collaborative platforms with EU Member States when it relates to cultural policy and the creative industries. \nRegistrations: \nSign up for webinar here \n  \nYou will receive a webinar link nearer the time. \n  \n

SUMMARY:UK in Europe: New Perspectives (Oxford for Europe)
DESCRIPTION:The pain of Brexit is growing by the month. Yet our Government and the popular press continue as if it were a triumph. Current evidence is that public opinion in the UK is remarkably resistant to evidence. How is the UK seen by others? In this meeting we will be getting the perspectives of two political commentators who were born in other EU countries and live in England. \nAlex Andreou is a regular member of the “Oh God\, What Now!” (formerly Remainiacs) podcast and its sister podcast\, The Bunker. \nAnnette Dittert is an award winning foreign correspondent and filmmaker for ARD German TV. \nGrassroots for Europe are proud to present this fascinating webinar along with our friends at Oxford for Europe. \nReserve your place here.

SUMMARY:Life without Erasmus: Responses from the 4 Nations
DESCRIPTION:Schools\, further education colleges and universities are on hols but\, when they return\, a further damaging effect of leaving the EU will hit them: we are no longer part of Erasmus\, the world’s most successful educational exchange scheme. Instead\, we’re being offered a very tepid\, diminished scheme named after Alan Turing. \nBut Erasmus is in fact Erasmus-Plus\, a €26bn scheme that extends more and more to youth as a whole\, including the most deprived\, so workers\, apprentices\, sports men and women et al can take part. To highlight how much we’re losing\, an ad hoc group around Grassroots for Europe is organising a special webinar\, Life without Erasmus\, on July 14 with representatives from the four nations discussing the way forward. So far\, the EU has turned down Scottish requests to re-join Erasmus-Plus but the campaign continues. \nRegister for the July 14 event\, which includes EMiS executive member David Gow\, here. \n
