SUMMARY:Should the EU fear Polexit? (ECFR Warszawa)
DESCRIPTION:Online debate oragnised by ECFR Warsaw and the ideaForum of the Stefan Batory Foundation. \nSpeakers: \n\nLucas Guttenberg\, Deputy Director\, Jacques Delors Centre (Berlin)\nCaroline de Gruyter\, Europe correspondent\, NRC Handelsblad\nDuncan Robinson\, Brussels bureau chief\, The Economist\nShahin Vallée\, Head of Geoeconomics Program\, DGAP\n\nCommentary: Piotr Buras\, Director Warsaw office\, ECFR \nChaired by: Edwin Bendyk\, President\, Stefan Batory Foundation \nThe ruling of the government-controlled Constitutional Tribunal\, issued at the request of the Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki\, opens the next stage of the political and legal confrontation between the Polish government and the European Union. By questioning the primacy of European law and refusing to recognize the judgments of the EU Court of Justice with regard to the principle of the independence of the judiciary\, Poland challenged the fundaments of the EU legal order. The verdict has also opened speculation as to whether the PiS-led government wishes Poland to remain a member of the EU for much longer. \nThe panel we will discuss the consequences of the judgment for Poland and for the European Union and ask experts whether Poland has actually entered the path of Polexit and what the EU should do to defend its legal space and protect the authority of the EU Court of Justice. \n  \nThe event will be recorded\, you can watch it here.

SUMMARY:Trading places: Brexit and the UK economy (Resolution Foundation)
DESCRIPTION:in-person and interactive webinar by the Resolution Foundation. \nWhat does wanting to be an open economy mean after Britain’s divorce from its biggest trading partner? Amid the immediate\, direct effects of Brexit\, can we see signs of the longer-lasting changes it might bring? SUMMARY:Changing to Proportional Representation: New Zealand’s experience (Pro Europa)
DESCRIPTION:Pro Europa Brussels invites you to a discussion with Prof Andrew Geddis of Otago University. \nThere are many parallels between New Zealand’s experience prior to the introduction of PR and the situation in the UK today\, where the Conservatives and some in the Labour Party are clinging to their vested interest in the present first-past-the-post system. That was also true in NZ\, yet the people of that country were able to change to a fairer and more democratic system. How they managed to achieve that and how it has turned out are questions that Professor Geddis will tackle in his talk. \nMore details and zoom link here.

SUMMARY:A forgotten Father of Europe?(Federal Trust for Education & Research)
DESCRIPTION:The former Director of the Federal Trust\, Dr Martyn Bond\, will be discussing his most recent book “Hitler’s Cosmopolitan Bastard”\, a biography of Count Richard Coudenhove-Kalergi. \nCoudenhove-Kalergi (RCK) was a central figure in the history of European integration before and after the Second World War\, arguing for a united Europe based initially on shared popular enthusiasm throughout Europe rather than on institutional structures. Martyn Bond’s biography is at the same time a narrative of RCK’s colourful life\, a history of Europe in the mid-20th century and a meditation upon the clashing philosophies of RCK and Jean Monnet. The presentation on 7th October will reflect all these complementary elements of the book discussed. \nMore details and registration here.

SUMMARY:EMiS webinar: German elections and Europe
DESCRIPTION:Germany goes to the polls on Sunday September 26 after 16 years of Angela Merkel as Chancellor and\, arguably\, the most powerful European leader. \nWhatever the election outcome there will be a new Chancellor. But\, as the most populous country and biggest economy in the EU\, the change of leadership and government in Germany will have huge impact on the EU. \nWe will be examining the outcome and the implications for Europe three days after the election\, on September 29\, at 1700\, with a stellar German cast: \nJoining us are: \n\nAndreas Botsch\, head of the international department\, the DGB (German TUC)\, for the SPD\nDr Rainer Ohler\, partner consultant nat Senior Strategists\, ex-head of corporate communications\, EADS/Airbus and foreign policy adviser to Helmut Kohl\, for the CDU\nDr Nils Redeker\, Policy Fellow for European Economic Policy at the Jacques Delors Centre;\nGerman Green MEP (TBC).\n\nThe webinar will be chaired by David Gow\, ex-German Correspondent\, The Guardian\, and EMiS executive committee member. \nPlease register at this link: \nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/german-elections-implications-for-europe-webinar-tickets-171288136427 \nThe ECFR commissioned a poll on the Post-Merkel era and here is a guide to findings: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBEYOND MERKELISM: WHAT EUROPEANS EXPECT OF POST-ELECTION GERMANY\nby Piotr Buras and Jana Puglierin \nKey data insights: \nMerkel built public support for German leadership within the EU \n\nAsked a hypothetical question about who they would vote for as ‘president of the EU’ if Merkel and Macron were the only candidates\, significant pluralities in all countries (including France) point to the chancellor.\nMore Europeans believe that without Merkel\, there would have been more conflict in the world rather than less.\nA plurality of Europeans said they trust Germany on economic and financial policy (36%)\, and to stand up for democracy and human rights (35%) on behalf of the bloc.\n\nBerlin’s credibility\, as a potential leader in geopolitics\, is markedly low across Europe: \n\nJust one in five citizens believe Germany can lead the bloc in its relations with Russia\, and even fewer think Berlin can defend EU interests when dealing with China.\n\nGerman citizens are also yet to be persuaded that their country should play a greater role within the EU: \n\nOnly on standing up for democracy and human rights do more than a third of respondents (38%) believe Berlin can defend European interests.\nA majority (52%) of Germans now think that their country’s “golden age” is in the past\, meanwhile 36% of Germans\, expect their country’s leadership to become more focused on helping other Europeans.\n\nMark Leonard\nDirector\nEuropean Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR)\nUnter den Linden 17\, 10117 Berlin\, Germany\n4th Floor\, Tennyson House\, 159-165 Great Portland Street\, London\, W1W 5PA\, UK\nmark.leonard@ecfr.eu | www.ecfr.eu | @markhleonard | @ECFR \n \n  \n  \n  \n \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEuropean Council on Foreign Relations\nUnter den Linden 17\n10117 Berlin\nGermany \nEmail: communications@ecfr.eu \nTo opt out of ALL email communication from ECFR mailings please click HERE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
