SUMMARY:A new story about Europe: UK or each of the 4 Nations?
DESCRIPTION:Brexit has shaken the foundations of the United Kingdom. Constitutional issues are high on the agenda across the four nations.\n\nIn Scotland\, the UK’s departure from the EU has fuelled the independence flame. The Northern Ireland Protocol is destabilising the region. Support for an independent Wales is polling at record highs.\n\nOn top of this\, the Covid pandemic has made many acutely more aware of legislative and political differences in the UK\, and shown that there are alternatives to Johnson’s methods – alternatives which many see as preferable. And recent polling shows that there is strong support across the UK for a closer relationship with the EU.\n\nIn relation to Europe\, the last Welsh and Scottish governments were significantly more constructive and amicable in their dealings with the EU than the UK government\, often taking opposing positions to Westminster on key issues and seeking to build bridges rather than erect barriers.\n\nIn turn\, the Internal Market Act\, in the eyes of many\, seeks to use Brexit as an excuse to re-centralise powers in London and undermine devolution.\n\nIn the midst of all this\, is there a story about a future relationship with the EU that could serve all the parts of the UK?  Is a shared European narrative for the four nations of the United Kingdom possible\, or have politics and public opinion shifted so much in the last five years that no single story can satisfy its parts?\n\nWhat impact might the prospect of changes in the constitutional arrangements of the UK have on our messaging about Europe? Could a pro-European narrative be constructed that appeals to all sides?\n\nAnd the most important questions for us: what does all this mean for those who believe in a closer relationship with Europe and the EU? And how should these considerations affect the way we campaign\, the way we talk about Brexit and its impacts\, and the story we tell about Europe?\n\nRegister: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZIsd-Gvpj4qGd3ugLmuovQzHtxPEuB8FdyT

SUMMARY:Post-Brexit Crime and Justice Co-operation Between the UK and the EU (Senior European Experts)
DESCRIPTION:A joint webinar of The City Law School and the Senior European Experts Group\, featuring an expert panel to debate the major changes and their implications for crime\, justice and civil law co-operation on both sides of the Channel post Brexit. \n\nSince the 1990s there has been a noticeable increase in cross-border crime\, terrorism and people trafficking\, facilitated by the development of new technology which facilitates criminal activity.  The European Union has developed increasingly sophisticated policy measures in response to the change in the threat level\, very often at the urging of the UK. \nWhile some of this cooperation has been retained in the provisions negotiated as part of the Trade and Cooperation Agreement between the EU and the UK\, the UK’s departure from the EU has meant extensive changes in the arrangements for co-operation in the fields of crime\, justice and security between the UK and the EU. The implications of these changes for law enforcement in the UK are important\, not least because the UK lost direct access to a number of important EU databases as well as the right to extradite through the fast-track European Extradition Warrant. Furthermore\, the UK can no longer rely on EU civil law co-operation in areas such as contract and family law. \n\nChair: Lord David Hannay (former UK Permanent Representative to the EU and former Ambassador to the UN and a member of the House of Lords European Affairs Committee) \n\nSpeakers: \n\nLord Peter Ricketts (former UK National Security Adviser and member of the House of Lords)\nProfessor Elspeth Guild (Jean Monnet Professor of Law at Queen Mary University of London and legal counsel to the immigration team at Kingsley Napsley)\nSir Julian King (former UK Ambassador to France and to Ireland and EU Commissioner for the Security Union\, 2016-19)\n\nThe event will be introduced by Professor Panos Koutrakos(Professor of EU Law and Jean Monnet Professor of EU Law at City\, University of London). \nMore details and registration for access to the zoom session here.

SUMMARY:EU's place in the new geo-economic order (EM International)
DESCRIPTION:Online discussion organised by the European Movement International. \nBy bringing together participants from business\, the EU institutions\, civil society organisations and trade unions\, this 60-minute panel event will be an opportunity to discuss the recent developments and future challenges of the EU’s internal market vis-à-vis the international arena. \nGlobalisation enables global exchanges of strategic flows such as commodities\, data\, capital\, goods\, and services as well as the free movement of people. The transmission corridors\, however\, are subject to multifold government and non-government interests which can be subject to strategic political influence. Immunising Europe from such influence provides risks and opportunities. \nPanel: \n\nHeidi Hautala MEP\, Vice-President of the European Parliament\, Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance\nOleksandr Pysaruk\, CEO\, Raiffeisen Bank Aval Board\nDmitri Trenin\, Director\,  Carnegie Moscow Center\n\nModerated by Heiko Borchert\, Owner and Managing Director\, Borchert Consulting & Research AG \nMore details and registration for access to the live stream here.

SUMMARY:Should the EU fear Polexit? (ECFR Warszawa)
DESCRIPTION:Online debate oragnised by ECFR Warsaw and the ideaForum of the Stefan Batory Foundation. \nSpeakers: \n\nLucas Guttenberg\, Deputy Director\, Jacques Delors Centre (Berlin)\nCaroline de Gruyter\, Europe correspondent\, NRC Handelsblad\nDuncan Robinson\, Brussels bureau chief\, The Economist\nShahin Vallée\, Head of Geoeconomics Program\, DGAP\n\nCommentary: Piotr Buras\, Director Warsaw office\, ECFR \nChaired by: Edwin Bendyk\, President\, Stefan Batory Foundation \nThe ruling of the government-controlled Constitutional Tribunal\, issued at the request of the Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki\, opens the next stage of the political and legal confrontation between the Polish government and the European Union. By questioning the primacy of European law and refusing to recognize the judgments of the EU Court of Justice with regard to the principle of the independence of the judiciary\, Poland challenged the fundaments of the EU legal order. The verdict has also opened speculation as to whether the PiS-led government wishes Poland to remain a member of the EU for much longer. \nThe panel we will discuss the consequences of the judgment for Poland and for the European Union and ask experts whether Poland has actually entered the path of Polexit and what the EU should do to defend its legal space and protect the authority of the EU Court of Justice. \n  \nThe event will be recorded\, you can watch it here.

SUMMARY:Changing to Proportional Representation: New Zealand’s experience (Pro Europa)
DESCRIPTION:Pro Europa Brussels invites you to a discussion with Prof Andrew Geddis of Otago University. \nThere are many parallels between New Zealand’s experience prior to the introduction of PR and the situation in the UK today\, where the Conservatives and some in the Labour Party are clinging to their vested interest in the present first-past-the-post system. That was also true in NZ\, yet the people of that country were able to change to a fairer and more democratic system. How they managed to achieve that and how it has turned out are questions that Professor Geddis will tackle in his talk. \nMore details and zoom link here.

SUMMARY:A forgotten Father of Europe?(Federal Trust for Education & Research)
DESCRIPTION:The former Director of the Federal Trust\, Dr Martyn Bond\, will be discussing his most recent book “Hitler’s Cosmopolitan Bastard”\, a biography of Count Richard Coudenhove-Kalergi. \nCoudenhove-Kalergi (RCK) was a central figure in the history of European integration before and after the Second World War\, arguing for a united Europe based initially on shared popular enthusiasm throughout Europe rather than on institutional structures. Martyn Bond’s biography is at the same time a narrative of RCK’s colourful life\, a history of Europe in the mid-20th century and a meditation upon the clashing philosophies of RCK and Jean Monnet. The presentation on 7th October will reflect all these complementary elements of the book discussed. \nMore details and registration here.
