SUMMARY:The war in Ukraine and the future of democracy in central Europe (Central European University)
DESCRIPTION:The war in Ukraine has transformed thinking about almost every aspect of the European Union\, from security to energy\, and put the spotlight on its central and east European member states. How does it affect the future of democracy in Central Europe? Does it sharpen the focus on the erosion of the rule of law and democracy in countries like Hungary and Poland\, or rather soften it\, since for a united response to Putin’s aggression in Ukraine the EU needs the support of its frontline states? \n  \nOnline lecture by the Central European University (Budapest). \nSpeaker: Timothy Garton Ash \nMore details here.

SUMMARY:Can the UK government deliver a Brexit dividend for farmers? (Institute for Government)
DESCRIPTION:Online panel discussion with the Institute for Government \nIn 2017\, Michael Gove called Brexit an ‘unfrozen moment’ which would allow ministers to address long-standing criticisms of the EU Common Agricultural Policy and free the government to radically reform the way it supports farmers. \nSo will redirecting England’s £2.4 billion annual farm budget deliver a substantial Brexit dividend? Will reforms bring about everything farmers\, environmentalists and taxpayers expect? And can those changes be delivered while the sector is coping with labour shortages\, rising energy prices\, new trade deals and post-Brexit regulatory changes? And how can policy on food\, farming and land use help the government meet its ambitions on net zero\, levelling up and tackling obesity? \nWith post-Brexit agricultural reforms the subject of a new IfG report\, Replacing the CAP\, this event will discuss what needs to be done to ensure a better future for food\, farming and land use in England. \nPanelists: \n\nJonathan Baker\, Deputy Director in the Future Farming and Countryside Programme at Defra\nMinette Batters\, President of the National Farmers’ Union (NFU)\nSue Pritchard\, Chief Executive of The Food Farming & Countryside Commission (FFCC)\nBeccy Speight\, Chief Executive of the Royal Society of the Protection of Birds (RSPB)\n\nThis event will be chaired by Joe Marshall\, Senior Researcher at the Institute for Government. \nMore details here.

SUMMARY:Catch 2022 - Britain's economic outlook post-pandemic and during a war (Resolution Foundation)
DESCRIPTION:The end of the Covid economic crisis is finally in sight. But it has swiftly been replaced by a terrifying conflict in Europe that threatens lives in Ukraine and livelihoods far beyond its borders. The UK’s immediate post-Covid economy thankfully doesn’t include the lengthy dole queues that normally follow a recession. But it instead faces new challenges – including older workers exiting the labour market and the highest inflation for at least three decades – amid huge uncertainty. \nHow strong will the UK’s economic recovery be\, and when will it approach a new ‘normal’? What impact will the war in Ukraine have on the UK\, European and Global economic outlook? And what does all this mean for the public\, and household finances? \nIn the week running up the OBR’s Spring Statement on Wednesday 23rd March\, the Resolution Foundation is hosting an in-person and interactive webinar to debate and answer these questions. Following a presentation of new research on the UK economic outlook for 2022\, we will hear from leading experts on the challenges this will pose for families and policy makers alike. \nThe event will be open for people to physically attend\, alongside being broadcast via YouTube and the Resolution Foundation website. Viewers will be able to submit questions to the panel before and during the event via Slido. \n  \nMore details and registration here.

SUMMARY:Nordic reactions to the Russian invasion of Ukraine (Nordic Horizons)
DESCRIPTION:Online event organised by Nordic Horizons\n\n\n\nWhat do Russia’s immediate Nordic neighbours – Finland and Norway – want to see happen in the wake of Putin’s invasion of Ukraine? Should NATO react or has expansion already given Putin a useful pretext for aggression? \nAll eyes are on Ukraine\, Belarus and the Baltic Republics as the Russian President threatens further military action. But the confrontation-avoiding\, peace-keeping Nordic nations are also on high alert. \nWould Russian military action against one Nordic nation or Baltic neighbour produce a military response by all of Scandinavia? Can Finland’s long-standing neutrality policy survive? Is NATO about to gain two new Nordic members – or is this being hyped up by countries like the US and UK which might have their own motives and agendas? \nSpeakers: \n\nDr. Hans Mouritzen\, Senior Researcher\, Foreign policy and diplomacy\, Danish Institute for International Studies\nDr. Johanna Vuorelma\, Centre for European Studies\, University of Helsinki\nDr. Iver B. Neumann\, Director\, Fridtjof Nansen Institute\, Norway\nProfessor Lynn Jamieson\, Chair Scottish CND\n\nChaired by Lesley Riddoch\, broadcaster\, journalist and Director of Nordic Horizons.

SUMMARY:Scottish Conservatives and Europe (EMiS webinar)
DESCRIPTION:The Scottish Conservatives have distanced themselves from Boris Johnson over #partygate. But where do they stand now over Brexit and relations between Scotland and the UK with the European Union and Europe? Do they fully support the Prime Minister’s approach? Or would they adopt a more conciliatory approach to Brussels? \nIn the second of our series of interviews/debates with the Holyrood-based parties on this issue\, Donald Cameron MSP (and current Shadow Cabinet Secretary for the Constitution\, External Affairs and Culture) talks to David Gow\, ex-Guardian correspondent in Europe and EMiS executive member. SUMMARY:Do Europeans trust the French on Russia? (European Council on Foreign Relations)
DESCRIPTION:  \nIn the context of the French Presidency of the Council of the EU\, the European Council on Foreign Relations is holding an online webinar on European public attitudes towards Russia’s invasion of Ukraine\, France’s leadership\, and EU security. \nWhat can we expect from President Macron’s summit on security and defence on 10-11 March? Since Russia invaded Ukraine\, the EU has taken giant leaps forward as a geopolitical actor – but the stakes could not be higher for France\, given it not only holds the EU Council Presidency but is just weeks away from key presidential elections. \nWhat can France learn from the European public mood in the weeks before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine? How do voters see the threat from Russia in terms of security and defence\, European sovereignty\, and international cooperation at large? \nThe  panel will discuss insights from new public opinion polling of 15\,000 citizens across 12 EU member states\, captured in the upcoming report A certain idea of Europe: How the next French president can lead (released 9 March)\, by Susi Dennison and Tara Varma.

SUMMARY:Scottish artists for Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:As Putin’s brutal invasion\, and the humanitarian tragedy in Ukraine continues to unfold\, it becomes ever more difficult to watch from afar. We\, as small group of artists from Scotland\, felt that it was important to come together to show our solidarity with the artists and people of Ukraine.\nRussian and Ukrainian people value culture deeply. We want to use culture to shame the Russian Government; to express solidarity with our colleagues in Ukraine\, and in particular those in Edinburgh’s twin city of Kyiv; and to show support for dissident Russian artists who have had the courage to stand in public against Putin’s war.\nThe plan is for us to protest outside the Russian Consulate on Melville Street in Edinburgh on the 9th of March at 12- 1 pm. We want to use the power of art (music\, song\, readings and visuals) to send a strong message of communal support from Scottish artists to Ukraine. We want your presence and need your help.\n\n\nProtest outside the Russian Consulate General in Edinburgh.\n\nWhat can you do?\n· First and foremost simply be there on the 9th of March\, with flags\, with visuals\, with your strong voice.\n· Wear or bring something Yellow or Blue\n· Encourage everyone you know in your networks to be there. The greater the crowd the stronger the message.\n· If you can offer a specific input in organising\, communicating or performing (visual\, song\, music\, performance) then please get in touch.\n\nOrganisers: David Greig. Nicola McCartney\, Matthew Zajac\, Jan-Bert Van Den Berg\, Penny Stone\, Harriet Mould\n\n[Image: Painting by Ukrainian Artist Maria Prymachenko – www.wikiart.org/en/maria-primachenko]

SUMMARY:Women's participation in European democratic life (European Movement International)
DESCRIPTION:Online panel discussion organised by European Movement International (EMI). \nAlthough gender equality is vocalised as a priority for the European Commission and the French Presidency of the Council of the EU in 2022\, we can still witness a gender gap in the participation of women in the public debate and democratic initiatives. While the past few months have shown that women’s rights can be endangered in Member States and that they need to be continuously safeguarded\, there is a need to foster spaces of discussion and debate among women in Europe and to ensure fairer decision-making processes for an effective democracy. \nMore details here.

SUMMARY:Living standards outlook for 2022 (Resolution Foundation)
DESCRIPTION:The good news is that Britain is finally stepping out of the pandemic. The bad news is that it is stepping straight into a renewed living standards squeeze which\, according to the latest Bank of England forecasts\, could be the tightest one in generations. Prices\, bills and taxes are all going up\, and wages aren’t keeping pace. The big question facing families is when they the squeeze will start to ease. \nHow tight might the current cost of living crunch be\, and what groups are likely to be most affected? To what extent will Britain’s tight labour market – with high vacancies and low unemployment – offset some of this pain? And is there anything more the Government can to do to soften Britain’s cost of living crunch? \nThe Resolution Foundation is hosting an in-person and interactive webinar to debate and answer these questions. Following a presentation of new research on the living standards outlook for 2022 and beyond\, we will hear from leading experts\, on the challenges this will pose for families and policy makers alike. \nThe event will be open for people to physically attend\, alongside being broadcast via YouTube and the Resolution Foundation website.
