SUMMARY:Two years after Brexit: Britain\, EU and Europe (EIAG)
DESCRIPTION:Joint webinar by the Jean Monnet Chair in EU Law at City Law School and the European and International Analysts Group. \n\nTwo years after the UK left EU\, and one year after the Trade & Co-operation Agreement between the two came into force\, what are the consequences of Brexit? How is the implementation of the TCA in its first year\, including its economic impact\, working out? What solution can be found to the difficulties with the Northern Ireland Protocol? The TCA made no provision for a structured relationship between the parties in external relations and defence but the co-ordinated response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine has shown that the UK and the EU can work together when there is the political will. And what are the implications for the Russian invasion for the future of Europe and of the UK-EU relationship? \n\n  \nMore details here.

SUMMARY:Catalonia\, Scotland and the EU: book launch (Centre on Constitutional Change)
DESCRIPTION:At this online book launch\, authors Niklas Bremberg and Richard Gillespie will be presenting their book: Catalonia\, Scotland and the EU: Visions of Independence and Integration (Routledge). \n\nNiklas Bremberg is Associate Professor in Political Science at Stockholm University and Senior Research Fellow at the Swedish Institute of International Affairs.\nRichard Gillespie is Emeritus Professor of Politics at the University of Liverpool. \nThis event will be held on Zoom; a recording will be made publicly available on the Centre on Constitutional Change’s YouTube channel. \nAbout the book\nThe electoral success of secessionist parties in Catalonia and Scotland over the last decade\, together with Brexit and the support for Eurosceptic parties in many EU member states\, have prompted a rethink of many taken-for-granted notions about politics in Spain\, the UK and the EU. Secessionist parties in Catalonia and Scotland often combine calls for independence with support for the EU\, but independence for Catalonia might entail the loss of EU membership. In the UK\, Scotland voted for the UK to remain in the EU\, yet it was forced to leave the Union along with the rest of the country: what effect has Brexit had on Scottish independence claims? Through comparing Catalonia and Scotland\, this short volume aims to contribute to debates on\, and advance knowledge of\, visions of independence and integration\, how they interrelate in Europe’s emergent political order\, and what they entail for European integration and democracy in the EU. \nView the book on the Routledge website: \nCatalonia\, Scotland and the EU: Visions of Independence and Integration \n\nEvent registration here.

SUMMARY:Telling a new story about Europe: Insights from Psychology (Grassroots for Europe)
DESCRIPTION:Telling a New Story About Europe: Some insights from psychology and implications for the pro-EU campaign\nPsychological science has much to offer pro-EU campaigners\, but throughout the campaign\, insights from psychology have not been prominent. This webinar organised by Grassroots for Europe will focus on one set of insights: that people think in ways that are conditioned by their world views\, expressed as an emotional investment in identities and attitudes that are difficult to shake. \nNick Crosby will introduce some ideas about how these psychological factors can be used to frame better stories about our European future\, and Richard Bentall will outline recent research that carries important lessons for opposition parties about how to pitch their position on Europe.  The session will be chaired by Jane Thomas\, who will lead a discussion on how to translate these insights into practical campaigning. \n  \nMore details and registration here.

SUMMARY:French Elections: Implications for Europe
DESCRIPTION:What does the French election mean for France – and for Europe’s future?\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEmmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen will once again contest the final round of the French presidential elections as they did in 2017 when Macron won easily by 66% to 33%. But this time could be different after the first round of voting showed the incumbent president ahead of her by some 5 points – and projections pointing to a very tight outcome on April 24. \nWhat does this mean for France – and for Europe’s future? \nWe’ll be discussing these critical questions with: \n\nDavid O’Sullivan\, former EU ambassador and leading Commission official who now heads Ireland’s Institute of International & European Affairs;\nJon Henley\, the Guardian’s Paris-based Europe correspondent;\nAssa Samaké-Roman\, an editor at La revue écossaise;\nJohn Lichfield\, former Paris correspondent of the Independent now writing insightful columns from his home in Normandy.\n\nThis is an unmissable live debate to be chaired by European Movement in Scotland executive member David Gow. \nMore details and registration here. \n\nThe event will be recorded\, you can catch up later here.

SUMMARY:A conversation with young Ukrainian leaders (Aspen Institute)
DESCRIPTION:Online panel discussion organised by the Aspen Institute. \nA cloud of uncertainty hangs over Ukraine’s future – as a sovereign state\, as a democracy\, as a European nation. The Russian military offensive has devastated towns and cities\, and 4 million Ukrainians have fled the country so far. Ukraine is fighting for its existence\, and huge questions remain – how can a peaceful solution be found\, and how can such atrocities be prevented in the future? What will the rebuilding of Ukraine look like\, and how will the country change? \nUkraine is home to an extraordinary generation of future leaders\, and young people are already affecting change in the upper levels of government\, business\, and civil society. Aspen UK has assembled a panel of young Ukrainian leaders from different sectors\, for a public online discussion about the future they envision and want to create for Ukraine. \n  \nMore details here.

SUMMARY:Exploring the government's pursuit of Brexit opportunities (The Independent)
DESCRIPTION:Online panel discussion with The Independent. \nDefenders of the prime minister claim he has shown leadership in responding to the Russian invasion of Ukraine independently of the European Union\, and that the British response has been all the stronger for our being outside the EU. \nVolodomyr Zelensky\, the Ukrainian president\, certainly seems to regard Boris Johnson as his closest ally\, speaking to him nearly every day by phone\, and addressing the House of Commons by video. On the other hand\, the British government’s claim to be “leading the world” in its welcome for refugees seems unconvincing. \nMore broadly\, Jacob Rees-Mogg’s appointment as minister for Brexit opportunities has provoked debate about what the upsides of Brexit might be. The consensus among economists is that the costs of leaving the EU will exceed the possible benefits for a long time if not indefinitely. But are there intangible benefits of having the freedom to act on the world stage? Do the British people value the principle of being able to control immigration more than the economic costs of making trade with the EU more difficult? \nJoin The Independent’s chief political commentator John Rentoul and a panel of experts\, including Anand Menon (Director of UK in a Changing Europe)\, Naomi Smith (Chief executive of Best For Britain) and Jon Stone (Policy correspondent)\, to discuss these questions. This event will be shaped by not only the ever-changing news cycle but by you\, the audience\, so feel free to submit your questions ahead of time. You will also be able to ask questions via a Q&A box during the event. \nSpeakers: \n\n John Rentoul\, The Independent’s chief political commentator\nAnand Menon\, Director of UK in a Changing Europe\,\nNaomi Smith\, Chief executive of Best For Britain\,\nJon Stone\, Policy correspondent\n\nMore details and registration here\,  and watch on demand here. \n  \n

SUMMARY:The war in Ukraine and the future of democracy in central Europe (Central European University)
DESCRIPTION:The war in Ukraine has transformed thinking about almost every aspect of the European Union\, from security to energy\, and put the spotlight on its central and east European member states. How does it affect the future of democracy in Central Europe? Does it sharpen the focus on the erosion of the rule of law and democracy in countries like Hungary and Poland\, or rather soften it\, since for a united response to Putin’s aggression in Ukraine the EU needs the support of its frontline states? \n  \nOnline lecture by the Central European University (Budapest). \nSpeaker: Timothy Garton Ash \nMore details here.

SUMMARY:The future of UK defence (Institute for Government)

One year on from its publication\, the Institute for Government is delighted to host MoD Permanent Secretary David Williams alongside Chief of the Defence Staff Admiral Sir Tony Radakin to discuss their priorities for the Ministry of Defence and what reforms will ensure the civil service and armed forces are able to meet the threats the UK faces in the world. \nThe event will be chaired by Bronwen Maddox\, Director of the Institute for Government \nMore details here.
