SUMMARY:The future of Russia (Aspen Institute)
DESCRIPTION:When Russia’s President Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion of neighbouring Ukraine in February 2022\, he plunged his country and his citizens into an ongoing period of economic decline and global isolation. He also exposed himself and his government to increased political instability. On day one of the war\, he ramped up Russia’s propaganda machine and began conducting country-wide crackdowns on signs of protest and dissent. The government has imposed travel restrictions on its citizens\, as nearly 4 million Russians were reported to have left the country by early May 2022. \nMany of those who have left belong to the generation of outward-looking entrepreneurs and creatives who have lived\, worked\, or studied outside of Russia in the past – the same people who were driving Russia’s economic and cultural sectors until a few months ago. This is the group that has been marginalised most by Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine\, and is most likely to support the anti-war movement. \nIs Russia facing a ‘brain-drain’? What does this mean for the country’s dwindling economy\, and for the anti-war movement? What impact have Western and global sanctions had on Russia’s economy and society\, have they gone far enough\, and are the right people feeling the strain? And will Russia ever be able to repair its relations with the rest of the world? \nThese questions will be discussed at an online event hosted by the Aspen Institute. More details here. \n

SUMMARY:Brexit Britain: Assessing the impact of Brexit on people\, places and forms (Resolution Foundation)
DESCRIPTION:hat were the initial impacts of the Brexit referendum result on the British economy? How has the impact changed since the UK’s Trade and Cooperation Agreement with the EU came into effect? What further shifts can we expect over the coming decade – and up to 2050 – as Brexit continues to alter the economic structure of the UK? And what does this mean for the UK’s aim of becoming a high-growth\, high-productivity economy? \nThe Resolution Foundation is hosting an in-person and interactive webinar – as part of The Economy 2030 Inquiry\, funded by the Nuffield Foundation – to debate and answer these questions. \n  \nMore details here.

DESCRIPTION:The European Movement International will hold its upcoming online panel discussion entitled Building on the Conference on the Future of Europe: What’s Next? \nNow that the Conference on the Future of Europe has finalised its recommendations\, the time has come to listen to citizens’ proposals and provide them with a clear perspective on how to implement the ambitious ideas they have put forward. SUMMARY:Will Scottish Independence spell the end of Brexit? (Yes for EU)
DESCRIPTION:A talk by Anthony Barnett\, co-founder of Europe for Scotland and Open Democracy; organised by Yes for EU. \n\n\n\n\n\nAnthony will explain the process which led to the creation of Europe for Scotland and present the goals of its Ambassador groups across many EU countries. He will argue that campaigning for Scottish Independence and EU membership\, as well as being a democratic imperative\, is the chance that the rest of the UK needs to reverse the Brexit process and redress the many harms it has caused. He will suggest that those in the UK who support democracy and want to rejoin the EU in their lifetime should get behind Scotland’s wish to become an Independent state and take its rightful place back within the EU family of nations. \nThis event will be of interest to all those who want to rejoin the EU\, whether they reside in England\, Wales or Scotland. \nThe talk will be followed by a Q&A. \n\n\n\n\nRegister here.

SUMMARY:Deconstructing Brexit discourses (Cambridge for Europe)
DESCRIPTION:Online discussion with Dr Ben Hawkins\, organised by Cambridge for Europe. \nWhat are the origins of British Euroscepticism\, and what motivated the UK electorate to vote narrowly to leave the EU in 2016? \nAs supporters of the EU start down the long road to rejoining\, it is important to understand the reasons why in 2016 many people believed that the UK would be better off outside the EU\, and why a substantial minority still do. \nIn this talk Dr Ben Hawkins\, a Senior Research Associate in the Social Sciences at the MRC Epidemiology Unit\, explores the reasons why the UK voted for Brexit\, some related to the EU\, others less so. \nMore details and registration here.

SUMMARY:Powering the Future: energy security in a time of transition (Aspen Institute)
DESCRIPTION:The outbreak of war between Russia-Ukraine has given rise to a series of energy dilemmas for Britain\, the European Union and their allies. The EU imported 40% of natural gas from Russia in 2019\, a figure almost identical to Britain’s 39%. With so many states heavily reliant on Russian imports for their energy production\, the invasion of Ukraine has prompted a scramble for a wide-ranging re-think of energy and security policy. \nKey to this re-evaluation is the need for new strategic alliances between states to meet energy needs and to continue with the decarbonisation of the energy sector. Will this crisis mean Britain and the EU succeed in forming new alliances to achieve their energy policy objectives? Who might these future allies be? And in a world of interdependence\, how can states find the right balance between forming strategic energy partnerships and autonomous energy production? \nThis public webinar organised by the Aspen Institute will see a panel of energy experts discuss the relationship between energy and national security\, and consider what the future of energy co-operation between Britain\, the EU and their allies could look like.

SUMMARY:The future of parliamentary treaty scrutiny (UK in a Changing Europe)
DESCRIPTION:After a period of wrangling\, the government has finally agreed that parliamentarians will have the power to scrutinize post-Brexit trade agreements. The creation of a formal framework for treaty scrutiny is a significant development for parliamentary oversight. But how did we get here? And what will this mean for parliament-government relations- and the government’s ability to negotiate trade deals outside of the EU- going forward? \n  \n  \nOnline panel discussion by UK in a Changing Europe. \nMore details here.

SUMMARY:Ukraine's defence of freedom: Aspen Institute
DESCRIPTION:The Russian-Ukrainian war has been waging for over three months\, with no clear end in sight. The cost to Ukraine’s people\, infrastructure\, and economy has been catastrophic. Having failed to capture Kyiv early in the war\, Russia has revised its aims – shifting focus in this second phase of the war to the eastern Donbas region. As this next phase intensifies\, Ukraine will be even more dependent on Western military aid. \nIn this special dialogue in partnership with Aspen Kyiv\, we will discuss the situation on the ground in Ukraine. We will hear the personal stories from Ukrainian’s currently fighting on the front line and examine key questions on what Ukraine needs for this next phase. Are Ukraine’s allies doing enough? Is it possible to find a peaceful solution? \nModerated by:\nPenny Richards – CEO of The Aspen Institute UK \nPanellists:  \nAnton Drobovych – Head of the Ukrainian Institute of National Memory\, currently on the front line with the Ukrainian armed forces \nLesya Vasylenko – Ukrainian MP and Co-Chair of Ukrainian British parliamentary friendship group \nAndriy Zagorodnyuk – former Minister of Defence of Ukraine \nDasha Zarivna – Advisor on communications of the Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine\, founder of the Vector business media and content studio\, and the Charitum social networking platform \nJoin us today: Monday\, 6 June\, 17:00 BST \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister here

SUMMARY:What kind of federation for the European Union? (The federal trust)
DESCRIPTION:Although the European Federation is formally not on the EU agenda yet\, turbulent events related to the Ukrainian war have accelerated many processes in the EU\, such as a common defence policy and turning off the tap on the Russian oil and gas pipelines. These external pressures coincide with the internal process of outlining the way forward for the EU. On 9th May\, the Future of Europe Conference\, in which ¼ of the participants are randomly selected EU citizens\, will make final recommendations\, which will almost certainly require constitutional changes. One of the recommendations is the call of the Federal Alliance of European Federalists for the EU to federate. \nWebinar by the Federal Trust for Education & Research. \nRecording will be available on the event website.

SUMMARY:A common vision: The Strategic Compass for a stronger EU security and defence (Aspen Institute)
DESCRIPTION:The Russian aggression against Ukraine has led to a rapid and fundamental rethink of the EU’s concepts about security and defence. At this important juncture the Strategic Compass\, the EU’s new defence and security agenda developed over the last couple of years\, looks to step up the EU’s ability to act\, increase its resilience and invest in capabilities. With a unified strategic vision for its 27 member states\, the EU strives to sustain its role as a global actor and aims to be a more effective partner when it comes to cooperation with NATO\, the US\, the UK and others. \nWith this new strategic vision\, what are the potential avenues for cooperation with the UK? And how can the EU and NATO work together to achieve their political objectives? \nWebinar by the Aspen Institute

SUMMARY:‘The Dark Side of Nationalism’: Fatal Flaw or Convenient Myth? (Yes for EU)
DESCRIPTION:Talk by Stephen Reicher\, Wardlaw Professor of Psychology at the University of St. Andrews. \nWhenever independence is discussed\, someone will invoke ‘the dark side of nationalism’ as a counter-argument. There is no doubt that history is replete with examples\, but is xenophobia and racism a necessary component of all nationalism or else a feature only of some? And if the latter\, what are the conditions under which nationalism turns toxic? In this talk\, I will consider the psychology of nationalism and inter-national relations. I will discuss the relationship between nationalism and racism. And I will examine how accusations regarding the ‘dark side of nationalism’ have been used and misused in the independence debate. \n

SUMMARY:Sturgeon at Brookings on energy policy (and more)
DESCRIPTION:Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has propelled forward questions about Europe’s energy independence and clean energy investments. As policymakers look for alternatives to Russian oil and gas\, they must balance meeting capacity needs today with meeting climate change pledges to decarbonize energy systems globally. Scotland has achieved meeting most of its current electricity demand from renewable energy sources\, but still faces steep challenges in transferring its heating and transportation sectors to carbon-free sources. \nOn Monday\, May 16\, as part of the Alan and Jane Batkin International Leaders Forum\, the Brookings Initiative on Climate Research and Action will host the First Minister of Scotland Nicola Sturgeon for keynote remarks followed by a conversation with Samantha Gross\, director of the Energy Security and Climate Initiative at Brookings. First Minister Sturgeon will discuss Scotland’s role in tackling the global climate crisis\, the justice and benefits of transitioning to a greener economy\, and what’s needed—especially in the wake of Russia’s destabilization of fossil fuel energy supplies—to boost Scottish and European energy security and self-reliance. \nViewers can submit questions for the speakers by emailing events@brookings.edu or on Twitter by using #EnergySecurity. \nRegister: https://www.brookings.edu/events/scotland-and-the-future-of-european-energy-security/

SUMMARY:Stop Boris\, stop the rot rally
DESCRIPTION:‘Stop Boris\, Stop the Rot’ rally\nOrganised By Whom: Open Britain\nWhere: Westminster\, London\nWhen: Sunday 15th May\nTime: 14:00\nDetails: https://www.stoptherot.uk/\nBoris Johnson is a rotten Prime Minister in charge of a rotten government. He lies as a matter of routine\, breaks even his own rules\, and will stop at nothing to avoid being held to account for his past decisions. If he had a shred of decency\, he would resign. But he doesn’t\, so he won’t. And his party colleagues show no sign that they will do the right thing and remove him from office any time soon. It’s time for us to take a stand and make our voices heard. Stop the Rot is a rallying call to all those who are tired of being taken for fools and want to send a very clear message…Johnson out now!
