SUMMARY:What happens now? The new Tory PM...and the UK
DESCRIPTION:On Monday\, the United Kingdom will have its fourth Prime Minister in eight years. New leaders traditionally enjoy a ‘honeymoon period’. But the new PM will instead face a bleak economic crisis of soaring energy bills\, rapidly shrinking pay packets and industrial strife. And with the next election only two years away\, the new Prime Minister has little time to tackle the current crisis\, boost the economy\, reform public services and deliver on promises made at the last election – from levelling up the country to getting Brexit done. \nWhat are the immediate political and economic challenges confronting the new Prime Minister? How might they address these? What are the potential implications of these policy choices for people and the political landscape? This joint event\, organised by UK in a Changing Europe\, Resolution Foundation and Onward will debate and answer these questions and consider what the future might hold for UK politics and the economy. \nThe event will be open for people to physically attend\, alongside being broadcast via YouTube and the UK in a Changing Europe website. Viewers will be able to submit questions to the panel before and during the event via Slido.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDate and Time\nThursday 8 September 2022\n2 – 4:15pm\nRegister to receive access link\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER IN PERSON\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER ONLINE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\nNeil O’Brien MP\nFormer Levelling Up Minister \nRachel Wolf\nFounding Partner at Public First \nJesse Norman MP\nFormer Financial Secretary to the Treasury \nRosie Campbell\nDirector of the Global Institute for Women’s Leadership \nTorsten Bell\nChief Executive of the Resolution Foundation \nJames Kanagasooriam\nPartner at Hanbury Strategy \nJonathan Portes\nSenior Fellow at UK in a Changing Europe \nFurther speakers to be confirmed

DESCRIPTION:Register to attend this event in person\n\n\nRegister to watch this event online\n\nAfter a frenetic summer\, the new prime minister will arrive in Downing Street with a busy in-tray. From looming energy price rises to wider pressures on the cost of living\, from backlogs in the NHS to questions over cleaning up government\, Rishi Sunak or Liz Truss will take over on 6 September with barely time to draw breath. \nAt this event\, IfG experts will explore the big questions facing the next occupant of No.10: what are the options for tackling the cost of living crisis? And how can the next prime minister demonstrate that he\, or she\, is serious about ministers maintaining high ethical standards? \nTo discuss these questions and more\, our IfG expert panellists will be: \n\nDr Hannah White\, Acting Director of the Institute for Government\nDr Gemma Tetlow\, Chief Economist at the Institute for Government\nNick Davies\, Programme Director of the public services team\nAlex Thomas\, Programme Director of the civil service team\nTim Durrant\, Associate Director for the ministers team\n\nThe event will be chaired by Emma Norris\, Director of Research at the Institute for Government. \n \n#IfGnewPM

SUMMARY:Bleak midwinter? Resolution Foundation debate
DESCRIPTION:Britain is in the midst of a painful cost-of-living squeeze\, with double digit inflation prompting the biggest fall in real wages since the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977. And the crisis will get far worse in the coming months as inflation continues to rise\, energy bills soar\, and rising interest rates are felt in higher mortgage payments. However\, the sheer scale\, duration and distribution of this income squeeze are far from certain\, and will depend in part on how policy makers respond. This will be the number one task facing the new Prime Minister. \nHow tight will the income squeeze get this winter\, and who will be most affected? How should the new Prime Minister approach tackling this crisis? What mix of tax and benefit policies\, or market interventions\, might be needed? And what might the Government’s approach mean for the policy makers at the Bank of England? \nThe Resolution Foundation is hosting an event to debate and discuss these questions. Following a presentation of key highlights from our latest Living Standards Outlook\, we will hear from leading experts on how the new Prime Minister might approach tackling the country’s deepening cost-of-living crisis. \nThe event will be open for people to physically attend\, alongside being broadcast via YouTube and the Resolution Foundation website. Viewers will be able to submit questions to the panel before and during the event via Slido.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDate and Time\nThursday 1 September 2022\n9:30 – 10:45am\nRegister to receive access link\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER NOW\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\nRobert Shrimsley\nChief Political Commentator at the Financial Times \nClare Moriarty\nChief Executive of Citizens Advice \nLalitha Try\nResearcher at the Resolution Foundation \nTorsten Bell (Chair)\nChief Executive of the Resolution Foundation

SUMMARY:Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the European Union’s Response: What’s Next? (European Movement International)
DESCRIPTION:The European Movement International\, together with the European Movement Lithuania\, are bringing together policy-makers\, diplomats and experts for an online panel discussion on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the European Union’s response. \nRussia’s brutal and unjustified invasion of Ukraine has fundamentally altered the security landscape in Europe. The EU has responded with determination and solidarity\, showing its support through sanctions against Russia and the provision of financial and military assistance. But as the war drags on\, the EU needs to reconsider its strategic response. Furthermore\, the EU has granted Ukraine candidate status\, setting it on the path towards EU membership. \n  \nMore details and registration here.

SUMMARY:What has leaving the EU meant for Scotland?
DESCRIPTION:Six years ago\, the Brexit referendum changed our lives for ever. \nThose of us who were opposed and who feared the worst have been\, unfortunately\, proved right. Brexit has made us poorer and more divided. \nIts negative impacts multiply day by day\, in Scotland and throughout these islands. Yet those who were responsible are still pretending that there is benefit to be had from it\, if we stick with it. \nJoin President of the European Movement in Scotland Michael Russell\, Chair of the European Movement UK\, Lord Andrew Adonis\, and Sarah Boyack MSP\, at a special event from the Scottish Parliament\, on the 23rd June at 1pm to mark the sixth anniversary of the Brexit referendum. \nThis event will be a renewal of our focus\, the opportunity to evaluate the political landscape and forge a new future for those of us that believe that Brexit is not working. \nIt will be a time to reflect but it will also be a time to put aside party-political differences and renew our commitment\, our determination to move forward as Europeans. \n  \nSign up here.

SUMMARY:The future of Russia (Aspen Institute)
DESCRIPTION:When Russia’s President Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion of neighbouring Ukraine in February 2022\, he plunged his country and his citizens into an ongoing period of economic decline and global isolation. He also exposed himself and his government to increased political instability. On day one of the war\, he ramped up Russia’s propaganda machine and began conducting country-wide crackdowns on signs of protest and dissent. The government has imposed travel restrictions on its citizens\, as nearly 4 million Russians were reported to have left the country by early May 2022. \nMany of those who have left belong to the generation of outward-looking entrepreneurs and creatives who have lived\, worked\, or studied outside of Russia in the past – the same people who were driving Russia’s economic and cultural sectors until a few months ago. This is the group that has been marginalised most by Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine\, and is most likely to support the anti-war movement. \nIs Russia facing a ‘brain-drain’? What does this mean for the country’s dwindling economy\, and for the anti-war movement? What impact have Western and global sanctions had on Russia’s economy and society\, have they gone far enough\, and are the right people feeling the strain? And will Russia ever be able to repair its relations with the rest of the world? \nThese questions will be discussed at an online event hosted by the Aspen Institute. More details here. \n

SUMMARY:Brexit Britain: Assessing the impact of Brexit on people\, places and forms (Resolution Foundation)
DESCRIPTION:hat were the initial impacts of the Brexit referendum result on the British economy? How has the impact changed since the UK’s Trade and Cooperation Agreement with the EU came into effect? What further shifts can we expect over the coming decade – and up to 2050 – as Brexit continues to alter the economic structure of the UK? And what does this mean for the UK’s aim of becoming a high-growth\, high-productivity economy? \nThe Resolution Foundation is hosting an in-person and interactive webinar – as part of The Economy 2030 Inquiry\, funded by the Nuffield Foundation – to debate and answer these questions. \n  \nMore details here.
