SUMMARY:Rejoin the EU: Glasgow Loves EU stall
DESCRIPTION:This will coincide with the National Rejoin March in London and take place on the steps of the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall\, on Buchanan Street\, close to the Donald Dewar statue.  The aim is to let people know about the march going on in London\, ask them about their current views on Scotland rejoining the EU\, either as part of the UK or as an independent state.  We will also make reference to the recently published Scottish government paper on the economy which stresses the need for Scotland to rejoin the EU.  If you would like more detailed information please contact Jenny Wilson from Glasgow Loves EU at Jenny@clanwilson.co.uk

SUMMARY:East Lothian & Borders European Movement
DESCRIPTION:We already have a very active group in the Edinburgh area. However\, we also have members and supporters in the East Lothian and Borders area\, and a number have expressed an interest in setting up a local group (or groups) in that area also.\nIf you are interested in getting involved in a local group in the East Lothian and/or Borders area\, we would like to invite you to join in an online meeting this coming Monday\, 17 October\, at 6.30 pm. We will see what interest there is in such a group\, and discuss what it could do to promote the pro-European message in those areas.\nWhat our local groups do is very much up to our members and supporters in local areas. Some are active in organising street stalls with information and campaign material. Others organise meetings and discussions\, online or in person\, on important European issues. Some publicise the European links of their own communities\, through activities such as ‘Eurowalks’.\n\nIt’s up to you what you want to do in your area – and all our members and supporters are welcome to join in!\nThis online event for East Lothian and Borders will start at 1830 with an introduction by one of our committee:\n\nSir Graham Watson\, former MEP\, and President of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe in the European Parliament.\nWe will then have a talk from another of our members\, John Home Robertson\, former MP and MSP for East Lothian\, about his recent work delivering aid to communities in Ukraine on behalf of Edinburgh Direct Aid.\nAfter that\, we will have a discussion about setting up a local group (or groups) in the East Lothian and Borders area. The meeting will finish by 8.00 pm.\n\n\nTo take part\, just join through this Zoom link. Meeting ID: 846 6589 2290 Passcode: 180865\n\nIf you are going to take part\, it would be useful (although not essential) if you told us by emailing me at chair@euromovescotland.org.uk Please also let us know if you would like to take part in the local group\, but can’t join us on Monday.\nFinally\, I should explain that we are sending this email to all our contacts in the EH postcode area\, which does of course cover more than East Lothian and Borders. If you want to get involved with our Edinburgh4Europe group\, which is very active\, you can find their details here.

SUMMARY:Scotland's constitutional future
DESCRIPTION:Scotland’s place in the union hangs in the balance. The Supreme Court is set to decide whether Nicola Sturgeon can hold her proposed 2023 independence referendum. If the verdict goes against the SNP\, then Sturgeon’s Plan B is to place independence at the heart of the next general election campaign. The UK government is determined to prevent a rerun of the 2014 vote\, while Labour is developing plans for further devolution and wider constitutional reform. Opinion polls reveal a nation split down the middle on independence. \nSo what will the Supreme Court’s verdict mean? Where does the debate on independence go next? And what alternative constitutional scenarios could unfold in Scotland’s future? \nOn the day after the Supreme Court hearing\, the Institute for Government will be hosting an event to discuss the court case\, the legal and constitutional principles at stake\, and explore how Scotland can move towards a stable future – inside or outside the union. \nOn our expert panel are: \n\nProfessor Aileen McHarg\, Professor of Public Law and Human Rights at Durham Law School\nRt Hon Jim Murphy\, former Secretary of State for Scotland and former Leader of the Scottish Labour Party\nStephen Noon\, former Senior Policy Adviser to the First Minister of Scotland and strategist for Yes Scotland in the 2014 independence referendum\nProfessor Adam Tomkins\, John Millar Chair of Public Law at the University of Glasgow and former Scottish Conservative MSP\n\nThe event will be chaired by Akash Paun\, Senior Fellow of the Institute for Government. \nThe event will be available to watch online only. You can submit questions for the panel via Slido. \n#IfGScotland \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Fife and Dundee 4Europe and Mark Ruskell MSP
DESCRIPTION:Our regional Green Party MSP\, Mark Ruskell\, will be joining us for our October meeting on Monday 10th October.  We will start at 6:15pm\, on Zoom and he will join us at 6:30.\n\nI would like to start the meeting by discussing how to move back to our face to face meetings from November and also to support any members who are intending to travel to London on the 22nd of October for the rescheduled National Rejoin March. Travel plans are quite difficult as the date chosen to reschedule this march is the first weekend of English half-term holidays.\n\n\noin Zoom Meeting: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/87902395780?pwd=eFJlQTNEMGo3Um5wbDN4TDNvWjNnQT09\n\nMark will give us his views and then we will open up the floor (or the screen!) for some questions and discussion.

SUMMARY:Neil Kinnock: Wales\, Europe and the Future
DESCRIPTION:At Wales For Europe\, we want to ensure that Brexit does not mean that Wales is closed off from our European neighbours\, showing that we have much more in common in a world in which old attitudes towards state isolation are rendered obsolete. \nIncreasing globalisation is an inevitability of the future\, with multiculturalism and pluralism becoming ever more important to economic growth and societal harmony. Our nation is one which has always opened its arms to newcomers\, providing a nation of sanctuary to refugees and embracing difference. We need to act in the interests of current and future generations\, making sure that the best opportunities are available for success in a common world. \nOur event is designed to build on this conversation that began before the pandemic and will continue to be ever more relevant in the future. \nPurchase your ticket for this event on Eventbrite here! \nThank you very much for taking the time to read this special edition of Brexit Watch! We are very keen to hear from European Movement UK’s members. If you have any comments or questions about getting involved with Wales for Europe’s future activities\, including stalls and events\, please get in touch by contacting hello@walesforeurope.org and heading your email with ‘Brexit Watch 6 August.’ \n

SUMMARY:The SNP and Europe: Angus Robertson
DESCRIPTION:The departure of Boris Johnson\, the architect of Brexit\, and his replacement as Prime Minister by Liz Truss\, a Remainer turned Brexiteer\, could enable a reset in the UK’s troubled relations with the EU. \nBut this is unlikely – with substantial knock-on effects for Scotland where pro-Remain/-Rejoin support is around 70% or higher than in the 2016 referendum. \nTo explore the implications of the Truss era for Scotland Angus Robertson MSP\, Cabinet Secretary for the Constitution\, External Affairs and Culture\, will be joined by Mark Lazarowicz\, European Movement in Scotland chair at 15:00 on 30 September for the last in our series of interviews with EU spokespersons in the five main political parties at Holyrood. \nMore details and registration here. \nThe event will be recorded\, you can catch up later here. \n

SUMMARY:Democracy and human rights in Belarus
DESCRIPTION:Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya\, awarded the EU’s Sakharov Prize in 2020 for freedom of thought\, is widely recognised as the real winner of that year’s presidential election in Belarus – a country infamous as Europe’s last dictatorship. The election laid bare Belarusian democracy as a sham. \nIn this joint event with Edinburgh University’s Political Union we will hear from her about the ongoing brutality of Aleksandr Lukashenko’s regime and the enormity of the struggle to achieve a viable democracy. But we will also reflect and discuss the actions big and small we can take in Scotland and the U.K. to show our solidarity with the movement for democracy in Belarus. \nNote: This event will now take place in the Quaker Meeting House on Victoria Street \nMore details and registration here.

SUMMARY:Trussonomics\, tax-cuts and turmoil
DESCRIPTION:The last few days have seen a radical reshaping of the Government’s economic policy and a radical reaction from financial markets. Out have gone both Treasury orthodoxy and the legacy of the Johnson premiership\, and in are lower taxes\, higher borrowing – and even higher borrowing costs as spooked markets respond. \nWill this new strategy boost growth in the short- and medium-term? What does market turmoil mean for the Bank of England and Treasury – which has a deadline of 23rd November to explain how the public finances will be set on an sustainable footing? Are more tax cuts to come\, or are spending cuts more likely? \nThe Resolution Foundation is hosting an event to debate and discuss these questions. Following a presentation of the Foundation’s analysis\, we will hear from leading experts on what might happen next amid a new era for economic policy making. \nThe event will be open for people to physically attend\, alongside being broadcast via YouTube and the Resolution Foundation website. Viewers will be able to submit questions to the panel before and during the event via Slido.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDate and Time\nThursday 29 September 2022\n10:30 – 11:45am\nRegister to receive access link.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER NOW\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\nStephanie Flanders\nSenior Executive Editor at Bloomberg and Head of Bloomberg Economics \nRobert Colvile\nDirector of the Centre for Policy Studies \nTorsten Bell (Chair)\nChief Executive of the Resolution Foundation

SUMMARY:Future of the UK
DESCRIPTION:A reminder that the Centre on Constitutional Change at the University of Edinburgh\, in association with the Sir Edward Heath Charitable Foundation\, is hosting a lecture by Sir Malcolm Rifkind tomorrow. \nThe devolution debate \nThis lecture will explore the history and future of devolution in the United Kingdom and look at the constitutional position of and arrangements for Scotland in the light of current debates about the Union\, independence and federalism. \nSir Malcolm will argue that\, whilst the continuing unity of the UK is ‘crucial to the well-being not just of ourselves\, but of Europe as a whole’\, devolution for the four nations ‘needs to be modernised and reformed’ in a process that would ‘not just be affect Edinburgh and Cardiff\, but include Westminster and its Upper House’. \nThe lecture will be followed by a drinks reception. \nJoin us! Register on Eventbrite. \nWe hope to see you there! \nCentre on Constitutional Change

SUMMARY:What happens now? The new Tory PM...and the UK
DESCRIPTION:On Monday\, the United Kingdom will have its fourth Prime Minister in eight years. New leaders traditionally enjoy a ‘honeymoon period’. But the new PM will instead face a bleak economic crisis of soaring energy bills\, rapidly shrinking pay packets and industrial strife. And with the next election only two years away\, the new Prime Minister has little time to tackle the current crisis\, boost the economy\, reform public services and deliver on promises made at the last election – from levelling up the country to getting Brexit done. \nWhat are the immediate political and economic challenges confronting the new Prime Minister? How might they address these? What are the potential implications of these policy choices for people and the political landscape? This joint event\, organised by UK in a Changing Europe\, Resolution Foundation and Onward will debate and answer these questions and consider what the future might hold for UK politics and the economy. \nThe event will be open for people to physically attend\, alongside being broadcast via YouTube and the UK in a Changing Europe website. SUMMARY:Bleak midwinter? Resolution Foundation debate
DESCRIPTION:Britain is in the midst of a painful cost-of-living squeeze\, with double digit inflation prompting the biggest fall in real wages since the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977. And the crisis will get far worse in the coming months as inflation continues to rise\, energy bills soar\, and rising interest rates are felt in higher mortgage payments. However\, the sheer scale\, duration and distribution of this income squeeze are far from certain\, and will depend in part on how policy makers respond. This will be the number one task facing the new Prime Minister. \nHow tight will the income squeeze get this winter\, and who will be most affected? How should the new Prime Minister approach tackling this crisis? What mix of tax and benefit policies\, or market interventions\, might be needed? And what might the Government’s approach mean for the policy makers at the Bank of England? \nThe Resolution Foundation is hosting an event to debate and discuss these questions. Following a presentation of key highlights from our latest Living Standards Outlook\, we will hear from leading experts on how the new Prime Minister might approach tackling the country’s deepening cost-of-living crisis. \nThe event will be open for people to physically attend\, alongside being broadcast via YouTube and the Resolution Foundation website.
