SUMMARY:Another Europe is possible and the cost of living crisis
DESCRIPTION:Launching our new online assembly series\, Power to the People\, in partnership with European University Institute\, European Alternatives\, Europe Calling\, Mehr Demokratie and others. \nThe series of assemblies aims to put people across the European continent in touch with other to foster cross-border dialogue about the challenges that face us. \nThe first assembly will focus on the cost of living crisis and takes place at 6pm\, Thursday 16 February 2023 via Zoom. Click on the link below to register now. \n\nRegister Now\n\nWe’ll hear from citizens from different countries across Europe who will share their experiences of how the cost of living crisis has affected them\, using spoken and visual tools. Then we’ll split into smaller breakout groups so everyone has a trusted space in which they can speak and get to know each other. \nAs rising living costs are affecting people in all the different countries around Europe\, we invite you to share your personal experiences: \nWhat does inflation mean for your life?  \nHow are you adapting to it? \nHow does it influence your perspective of the future? \nEveryone of us is affected by political choices on the European level. We want to complement expert discussions by discussions between the people on the ground. \nThis event is a chance to express yourself and to listen and learn about different perspectives on shared problems. Because reflecting on common fears\, hopes and challenges is the first step towards building a community of citizens that can make their voices heard and take action.

SUMMARY:Brexit polling: beyond the numbers
DESCRIPTION:A Grassroots for Europe Webinar\nOver the course of 2022\, opinion polls have recorded a steady increase in anti-brexit sentiment. But the numbers for and against vary according to the wording of the question\, and the polls require interpretation. This webinar brings together three experts to discuss how to interpret the polling data\, and the implications for pro-EU campaigning:- \n\nRichard Bentall is a professor of clinical psychology\, who will explain the psychology behind the response to different polling questions (Brexit going badly; Brexit wrong; greater alignment; rejoin EU).\nPeter Kellner\, who is past president of YouGov\, will consider the implications of recent polling for Labour party policy\, and how to bring them to bear on the party leadership.\nFlo Hutchings\, Political Director at Best for Britain\, will explain the novel technique of MRP polling and how it might be applied to EU-related issues to inform the strategies of local campaign groups.\n\nThe session aims to develop a greater awareness of the meaning of polling data and how to use the data in pro-EU campaigning. \nRegister in advance for this meeting at via TicketTailor here https://www.tickettailor.com/events/grassrootsforeurope1/829398 \nThe event link will be emailed to all registered participants a day before the event. Please click on the link shortly before the start time (18.00 on February 15th).

SUMMARY:Retained EU Law Bill webinar: Caroline Lucas/Mhairi Snowden with European Movement UK
DESCRIPTION:Join the European Movement UK for a webinar to hear from veteran campaigners including Caroline Lucas MP and Mhairi Snowden from Human Rights Consortium Scotland on the risks of the Retained EU Law Bill\, and the best ways to campaign against it. \nIn the House of Commons last week\, MPs voted against amendments to delay the Retained EU Law Bill. This means that\, as it stands\, the Retained EU Law Bill will come into effect on December 31st\, 2023\, jeopardising the standards that keep us safe. \nWe don’t have much time. It’s vital that we keep working to stop this law over the coming weeks\, before it comes back to Parliament for a final vote. \nThe ‘Retained EU Law Bill Webinar’ will be an open conversation where you will have the opportunity to ask questions on ways the bill could directly impact your area. This could include workers’ rights\, environmental standards and food safety. \nWe are in the Battle for the Soul of our Country. But together we can ‘Save our Standards’ and stop the implications of Brexit from being taken further. \nABOUT THE SPEAKERS \nCAROLINE LUCAS has been the MP for Brighton Pavilion since 2010. A leading campaigner on topics including the environment and animal rights\, Caroline is a former Leader of the Green Party of England and Wales and a former MEP for South East England. Caroline is a Vice President of the European Movement UK. \nMHAIRI SNOWDEN is Director of the Human Rights Consortium Scotland\, a network of over 170 member organisations from across civil society. They work together on projects or research on specific issues\, as well as influencing policy and law. \nMore speakers will be announced shortly. \nABOUT THE EVENT \nThe webinar is free to attend but please consider making a donation to the European Movement UK during the registration process to help us put on more events like this\, help us strengthen our campaigns\, and help us support our local grassroots groups. \nRegistrations close 1 hour before the event starts. SUMMARY:3 Years of Brexit: Scotland's place in Europe (Time for Scotland)
DESCRIPTION:Time for Scotland – the group that organised rallies on Supreme Court Verdict Day – is holding a ‘Lights On’ event outside the Scottish Parliament on 31 Jan 2023\, urging support for Scotland’s right to self determination. \nOur aim is to remind everyone Brexit was the democratic choice of English voters\, not Scots. \nA majority of citizens in every council area of Scotland voting Remain\, and – as the disastrous consequences of Brexit become more and more apparent – Scots were right to ignore the lies\, and hollow talk of taking back control by scapegoating Europeans. \nSo we hope to replicate the turnout and media impact of the Supreme Court verdict day rallies with a call to keep the lights on for Scotland in Europe – at Holyrood\, around Scotland and in European capitals. \nConfirmed speakers include Alyn Smith MP\, Jim Fairlie MSP and Lorna Grant MSP \nMarch and Rally Edinburgh\nMeet at 5pm – Pollock Halls \nThe fully stewarded torch-lit procession will assemble at Pollock Halls of Residence from 5pm and set off at 5.30pm down the Galloping Glen of Holyrood Park towards the rally at the Parliament\, which starts at 6pm. \nThere will be music and performances by European citizens who have made Scotland their home along with guest speakers – and lots of lights. \n\n More info and order your torch \n\n\n\n\nPerform on the night\n\nWe are looking for European musicians\, singers and dancers who have made Scotland their home to perform on the night. \nIf you would like to volunteer to perform\, please get in touch. \n\n\n\n\n Musical Performers Registration

Return in stages? Lobbying Labour as next UK govt?— our central political campaign \n2.    Holyrood Cross Party Group — liaison with parties\, new employee to act as secretary of group \n3.    Erasmus campaign/maybe unlocking Horizon? — lobbying government \n4.    Web casts/In person meetings — our educational outreach \n5.    Developing local groups — activities/events/walks — increasing membership and reach \n6.    Relations with EMUK\, EU&ME\, EMI — partnership organisations \n7.    PR and Positioning — getting external comms right \n8.    Newsletter/website — membership communications \n9.   Campaigning on the REUL Bill (on this is you didn’t catch the Glasgow Group’s Lockdown Livestream on this\, it is a very helpful explanation:\n \nCatherine Barnard was a phenomenal success having been viewed over 10\,000 times \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nhttps://youtu.be/wQkmdLCVMJ4

SUMMARY:(How) can the House of Lords be reformed: IfG
DESCRIPTION:Monday 12 December 2022\, 12:30 – 13:30\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister to attend this event in person\n\n\nRegister to watch this event online\n\nThe House of Lords is back in the spotlight. Boris Johnson’s resignation honours have reignited debates about the appointment process and the ability of politicians to hand life peerages to their friends\, supporters and donors. Key figures across Westminster have called for stronger independent oversight of the appointment process. Labour Leader Keir Starmer has gone further\, committing to replacing the House of Lords with an elected chamber if he wins the next general election\, informed by the work of former prime minister Gordon Brown’s constitutional commission. \nHowever\, as past governments have discovered\, how to reform the second chamber is the cause of intense disagreement. Who should replace the current membership? What should be the role of a second chamber? What are the risks involved in embarking on major constitutional change – and are the knock-on impacts clearly understood? \nThis event – part of the IfG Bennett Institute Review of the UK Constitution – will explore current proposals for reforming the House of Lords\, including the newly-published Brown review\, and consider how reform could be achieved. \n\nMatthew Hanney\, former Special Adviser to Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg\nDarren Hughes\, Chief Executive of the Electoral Reform Society\nLord Norton of Louth\, Conservative Peer and Professor of Government at the University of Hull\nSarah Sackman\, Commissioner\, Brown Commission\, Labour candidate for Finchley and Golders Green\n\nThe event will be chaired by Dr Hannah White\, Director\, Institute for Government. \n#IfGLordsReform

SUMMARY:Defending human rights in Europe and the UK (European Movement in Scotland Webinar)
DESCRIPTION:The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) and the Convention that goes with it are very much inspired by post-War British politicians and thinkers. Yet some Conservatives and others would like to reduce its role – in some cases to the point of the UK leaving both. \nDominic Raab\, restored to his post as Justice Secretary\, is determined to press ahead with legislation on giving a proposed British Bill of Rights precedence over the ECHR – not least by enabling deportation flights to Rwanda and elsewhere. \nThe UK used to have a much-lauded reputation for safeguarding and promoting human rights. So\, how has it come to this? Join us in our latest webinar which will focus on the threat to human rights in the UK and elsewhere and the role of the ECHR in upholding them. \nWe anticipate a lively and informative discussion between Joanna Cherry KC MP\, a leading human rights lawyer and activist\, and Sir Ian Forrester KC\, a prominent Scottish judge who was the last serving British judge on the European Court of Justice before Brexit and now acts with Ampersand Advocates. \nTheir discussion will be moderated by former Labour MP and EMiS chair Mark Lazarowicz\, who is the founding chair of the Citizen Rights Project.

SUMMARY:The UK-EU relationship: the way ahead
DESCRIPTION:A joint seminar of the Jean Monnet Chair in EU Law at City\, University of London and the European & International Analysts Group \nThe UK-EU relationship since Brexit has been characterised by tension\, disputes and disappointments. \nDespite signing a Trade and Co-operation Agreement in 2020\, the UK and the EU have argued over the Northern Ireland Protocol\, fishing licences\, the supply of vaccines\, the interpretation of trading rules and the treatment of European citizens in the UK (and of UK citizens in some EU countries). \nBut Britain now has its fifth prime minister since the 2016 referendum. There have been hints of a more co-operative approach from the UK side and a clear willingness to resume dialogue by the EU. In the face of the post-Brexit extraordinary developments of the pandemic\, the invasion of Ukraine and the current energy and economic crisis\, what should be the agenda to enable the UK and the EU to improve their current relationship? \nThese questions will be debated by an expert panel chaired by Professor Panos Koutrakos\, Professor of EU Law and Jean Monnet Professor of EU Law at City\, University of London: \n\nSir Jonathan Faull\, Partner and Chair\, European Public Affairs\, Brunswick\, Brussels; Director-General\, Internal Market & Services\, European Commission 2010-15; member of the European & International Analysts Group\nJill Rutter\, A senior research fellow at the UK in a Changing Europe and Visiting Professor at King’s College London; former British senior civil servant in HM Treasury\, Number 10 and Department for Environment\, Food & Rural Affairs\nDominic Grieve KC\, A barrister at Temple Garden Chambers; Attorney General from 2010 to 2014; Member of Parliament for Beaconsfield from 1997 to 2019\n\nTo register to attend\, please click here.

SUMMARY:A perfect storm of crises: what's to be done? Oxford for Europe
DESCRIPTION:Once again we are very pleased to be able to introduce two distinguished guests who can speak with exceptional authority on their subjects. \nJust now we are facing perhaps more uncertainty than at any time in living memory. The harms done to the UK’s economy and reputation by Brexit have been compounded by the pandemic\, Ukraine and the cost of living crisis. At the same time the country is suffering an almost unique absence of competent leadership and a collapse of trust in government. Remorse over the Northern Ireland Protocol is raising the threat of political instability and trade war with our nearest neighbours. \nWho better to speak on these thorny subjects than one of the authors of the Good Friday Agreement and one of the country’s foremost economists? \n\n\nBook your place here\n\nYou can take part free of charge. However we welcome voluntary donations\, which help fund our activities. If you wish to donate\, please click here: \n\nDonate\n\n\n\nRead more here

SUMMARY:Does the UK human rights regime require reform? IfG
DESCRIPTION:The protection of people’s rights and liberties is a key part of the UK’s constitution\, dating all the way back to the twelfth century. In recent years\, and with the Covid pandemic seeing unprecedented restrictions on people’s everyday lives\, the debate about what rights should be protected – and how – has been reignited. \nThe government has shelved a new British Bill of Rights\, but politicians of all parties disagree over whether the UK should continue to be part of the European Convention on Human Rights. \nSo does the government need to reform how people’s rights are protected in the UK? What questions have been raised about the right to protest after the focus on how the public could show dissent during King Charles III’s accession? And what role should international institutions play in upholding human rights? \nPanellists: \n\nEstelle Dehon KC\, Public Law Barrister at Cornerstone Barristers\nRajiv Shah\, former Number 10 Special Adviser\nProfessor Colm O’Cinneide\, Professor of Human Rights Law at UCL\n\nThe event will be chaired by Raphael Hogarth\, Associate at the Institute for Government and barrister at 11KBW \nRegister: https://www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk/events/uk-human-rights-regime?utm_source=tuesday_weekly_newsletter&utm_medium=Oct_25_2022_event_newsletter_left&utm_campaign=Oct_25_2022_event_newsletter&inf_contact_key=cae0d02e5cbe10819db317908cfa356009c74070ac2bf3cfa7869e3cfd4ff832 \nevent will be chaired by Raphael Hogarth\, Associate at the Institute for Government and barrister at 11KBW \n  \n#IfGhumanrights \nWe would like to thank Cornerstone Barristers for kindly supporting this event.  \n
