This event\, ‘Economic impact of Brexit’\, will bring together economists with different perspectives to discuss the widely publicised estimates by the Centre for European Reform\, the OBR and others including the BriefingsforBritain website\, and to see what common ground if any\, exists on what we know about the economic impacts of Brexit to date. \nClick on this link to our website for further details and sign up.

SUMMARY:Labour and Europe: EMiS webinar
DESCRIPTION:Opinion polls are pointing to a majority Labour government emerging from the next UK general election in 2024/5 – and a surge in both support for rejoining the EU and regret over Brexit. \nBrexit is widely seen as a root cause of the UK’s current economic ills – and likely to blight its performance in future despite what ministers in the Sunak government say. But Labour under Keir Starmer is dead-set against reversing Brexit or even rejoining the EU single market/customs union. \nTo examine why and what Starmer and David Lammy\, shadow foreign secretary\, mean by “fixing the UK’s tarnished relationship with the EU”\, we’re joined by: \n\nDianne (Baroness) Hayter\, former shadow deputy leader in the House of Lords and co-editor of the Forgotten Tribe\, a recent book on the UK’s MEPs;\nIan Murray\, Labour MP for Edinburgh South and shadow Scottish Secretary;\nDenis MacShane\, former Labour Minister for Europe and author of Brexiternity: the Uncertain Fate of Britain.\n\nThe event will be moderated by Mark Lazarowicz\, ex-EMiS chair and former Labour MP for Edinburgh North & Leith. Please register to receive the Zoom link. \nThe event will be recorded\, you can catch up later here. \n

SUMMARY:Europe and the war in Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:How have the EU and the UK responded to this crisis and what does it mean for their current/future defence co-operation?\n\n\n\nThe first anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine\, a flagrant violation of a sovereign nation’s territorial integrity and Europe’s peace and security order\, could be the prelude to huge new spring offensives by both sides. \nHow have the EU and the UK responded to this crisis and what does it mean for their current/future defence co-operation? Will it propel a European defence union? \nJoin us to discuss these and other foreign and security policy issues with: \n\nJuliet Kaarbo\, Professor of Foreign Policy at the University of Edinburgh and Co-director of the Scottish Council on Global Affairs;\nChristos Katsioulis\, head of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung for Co-operation and Peace in Vienna and author of numerous books on defence issues;\nStephen Gethins\, Professor of Practice in International Relations at St Andrew’s University and former SNP Commons spokesman on Europe.\n\nThis keynote debate will be chaired by European Movement in Scotland (EMiS) executive member and former EU Correspondent David Gow. \nMore details and registration here (you’ll be sent a zoom link after registration).

SUMMARY:Why the Northern Ireland Protocol is a Great British concern (London4Europe)
DESCRIPTION:Why the Northern Ireland Protocol is a Great British concern (and not for the reasons you think)\nKaty Hayward\, Professor of Political Sociology\, Queen’s University Belfast will discuss the Protocol on Ireland/Northern Ireland that was signed as part of the UK-EU withdrawal Agreement in 2019. Katy will look at the Protocol from a slightly different perspective\, drawing on close monitoring of the Protocol’s development and implementation. She will show why the Protocol should be a concern to the public in Great Britain because of what it seeks to protect\, because of the way it has been handled\, and because what happens to it in future – for good or ill – will have implications for the whole of the United Kingdom. \nMore details and registration here.

DESCRIPTION:Speech by Anthony Salamone\, Managing Director of European Merchants\, on the mysterious role of the euro in Scottish politics \n  \nAnthony Salamone will parse myths on Scotland\, the euro and EU membership under independence. He will explore the purpose\, function and meaning of the euro in the European Union of today. He will probe the antipathy towards the euro in Scottish politics and its consequences for Scotland’s EU relations. He will consider Scotland’s approach to the euro in the event of independence\, including in a hypothetical EU accession process. In doing so\, Anthony will assess how Scotland’s myths on the euro and EU membership reflect its substantial disconnects from the EU in practice. Q&A to follow. \nMore details and registration here.

SUMMARY:Brexit polling: beyond the numbers
DESCRIPTION:A Grassroots for Europe Webinar\nOver the course of 2022\, opinion polls have recorded a steady increase in anti-brexit sentiment. But the numbers for and against vary according to the wording of the question\, and the polls require interpretation. This webinar brings together three experts to discuss how to interpret the polling data\, and the implications for pro-EU campaigning:- \n\nRichard Bentall is a professor of clinical psychology\, who will explain the psychology behind the response to different polling questions (Brexit going badly; Brexit wrong; greater alignment; rejoin EU).\nPeter Kellner\, who is past president of YouGov\, will consider the implications of recent polling for Labour party policy\, and how to bring them to bear on the party leadership.\nFlo Hutchings\, Political Director at Best for Britain\, will explain the novel technique of MRP polling and how it might be applied to EU-related issues to inform the strategies of local campaign groups.\n\nThe session aims to develop a greater awareness of the meaning of polling data and how to use the data in pro-EU campaigning. \nRegister in advance for this meeting at via TicketTailor here https://www.tickettailor.com/events/grassrootsforeurope1/829398 \nThe event link will be emailed to all registered participants a day before the event. SUMMARY:Retained EU Law Bill webinar: Caroline Lucas/Mhairi Snowden with European Movement UK
DESCRIPTION:Join the European Movement UK for a webinar to hear from veteran campaigners including Caroline Lucas MP and Mhairi Snowden from Human Rights Consortium Scotland on the risks of the Retained EU Law Bill\, and the best ways to campaign against it. \nIn the House of Commons last week\, MPs voted against amendments to delay the Retained EU Law Bill. This means that\, as it stands\, the Retained EU Law Bill will come into effect on December 31st\, 2023\, jeopardising the standards that keep us safe. \nWe don’t have much time. It’s vital that we keep working to stop this law over the coming weeks\, before it comes back to Parliament for a final vote. \nThe ‘Retained EU Law Bill Webinar’ will be an open conversation where you will have the opportunity to ask questions on ways the bill could directly impact your area. This could include workers’ rights\, environmental standards and food safety. \nWe are in the Battle for the Soul of our Country. But together we can ‘Save our Standards’ and stop the implications of Brexit from being taken further. \nABOUT THE SPEAKERS \nCAROLINE LUCAS has been the MP for Brighton Pavilion since 2010. A leading campaigner on topics including the environment and animal rights\, Caroline is a former Leader of the Green Party of England and Wales and a former MEP for South East England. Caroline is a Vice President of the European Movement UK. \nMHAIRI SNOWDEN is Director of the Human Rights Consortium Scotland\, a network of over 170 member organisations from across civil society. They work together on projects or research on specific issues\, as well as influencing policy and law. \nMore speakers will be announced shortly. \nABOUT THE EVENT \nThe webinar is free to attend but please consider making a donation to the European Movement UK during the registration process to help us put on more events like this\, help us strengthen our campaigns\, and help us support our local grassroots groups. \nRegistrations close 1 hour before the event starts. SUMMARY:Fife4Europe branch meeting

Return in stages? Lobbying Labour as next UK govt?— our central political campaign \n2.    Holyrood Cross Party Group — liaison with parties\, new employee to act as secretary of group \n3.    Erasmus campaign/maybe unlocking Horizon? — lobbying government \n4.    Web casts/In person meetings — our educational outreach \n5.    Developing local groups — activities/events/walks — increasing membership and reach \n6.    Relations with EMUK\, EU&ME\, EMI — partnership organisations \n7.    PR and Positioning — getting external comms right \n8.    Newsletter/website — membership communications \n9.   Campaigning on the REUL Bill (on this is you didn’t catch the Glasgow Group’s Lockdown Livestream on this\, it is a very helpful explanation:\n \nCatherine Barnard was a phenomenal success having been viewed over 10\,000 times \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nhttps://youtu.be/wQkmdLCVMJ4
