SUMMARY:Brexit: at what cost to business?
DESCRIPTION:Register now to join us on Tuesday 9th May 2023 at 6pm at our next Labour Movement for Europe members online seminar with Darren Jones MP. \nDarren is Chair of the Business and Trade Select Committee and will be speaking about what an incoming Labour Government could do to address the impact of Brexit on British businesses. \n\n\n\n\nClick here to register for the Darren Jones Seminar\n\n\n\n\n  \n8 out of 10 UK firms say that leaving the European Union has had a bigger impact on their supply chains than the war in Ukraine*. As our Chair\, Stella Creasy\, recently argued in parliament \n“The truth is that we know what damage Brexit is doing to our country\, and we have seen it for years. Members have already talked about many of the impacts\, including the shortages of people working in our hospitality industry and in health and social care; the blunt economic damage; the thousands of small businesses in constituencies across this country that have just given up trading—one of the truisms here is that people can fight many battles in life\, but they cannot fight geography—because being able to trade just as easily with 500 million consumers on our doorstep does make a difference; the supply chains that have been severed by our leaving the European Union; the wealth of paperwork that so many people now face; and the impact that it has had on the cost of living.” \nThis members event will be your opportunity to hear first hand from Darren about the work of his committee on this issue. We will also be discussing how you can help the work the Labour Movement for Europe is doing within the Labour movement to campaign for action to help British businesses facing the bills of Brexit. \n\n\n\n\nClick here to register for the Darren Jones Seminar\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:More Europe Day events
DESCRIPTION:We are all looking forward to a busy couple of weeks as the excitement builds up to Europe Day – and let’s not forget the Eurovision Song Contest. \nAcross the continent our fellow Europeans will be celebrating Europe’s achievements and unity while commemorating the signing of the Schuman Declaration on the 9th of May 1950\, this ambitious plan helped secure long-term peace in post war Europe and laid the foundations for what is now the European Union. \n  \nBut lets not forget that Eurovision arose out of the same desire – a coming together of European nations after decades of war and strife. And whether you love it\, or find the music “challenging”\, the sight of so many of our young people enjoying something so quintessentially European\, means that this can be a focus for our celebrations of being part of the European family. \nHere is some of the events taking place to celebrate Scotland’s place in Europe and that we would love for you to be involved with. \n  \n\nThe Citizens Rights Project are holding on online event titled: European citizens and Scotland: their issues\, concerns & future prospects. SUMMARY:The failure of Remain: London4Europe
DESCRIPTION:Adam Fagan and Stijn van Kessel have written a book discussing how Remain failed\, You may of may not agree with their arguments and conclusions\, but I bet you find something to stimulate you one way or the other in this event. \nStudies of the United Kingdom’s decision to leave the European Union (“Brexit”) have largely focused on the role of politicians and political parties or the characteristics of Leave and Remain voters. The Failure of Remain offers the first comprehensive study of the UK’s grassroots anti-Brexit movement. Emerging in the weeks and months following the June 2016 referendum\, this movement was the most significant and wide-scale mobilization of proEuropean support that the UK had ever witnessed. \nIn ‘The Failure of Remain’\, Adam Fagan and Stijn van Kessel assessed participants’ ideologies\, arguments\, and strategies. Drawing evidence from first-hand interviews\, an original survey of anti-Brexit activists\, and an analysis of their campaign materials\, Fagan and van Kessel conclude that\, while the anti-Brexit movement was successful in mobilizing a large number of pro-European citizens\, its impact was limited by weak links to political elites and institutions\, divisions between organizations and activists\, and the absence of a clear stance on the UK’s relationship with the European Union. \nThe Failure of Remain reveals the difficulties of formulating effective pro-European arguments. What lessons for the future can be gleaned from past experiences? What can be learned for campaigns for an ever-closer relationship with the EU and ultimately to Rejoin it? \nAdam Fagan – Professor of European Politics at King’s College London and senior editor of East European Politics.\nStijn van Kessel – Reader (Associate Professor) in European Politics\, School of Politics and International Relations\, Queen Mary University of London. \nDate: 27th April\nTime: 18:45 \nRegistration: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_OhtIHYejQLufB3EQcCZ51w

SUMMARY:Stephen Flynn MP at Institute of Government
DESCRIPTION:The SNP has a new leader and Scotland has a new first minister. So what does the election of Humza Yousaf mean for the Scottish government – and for the role that the SNP plays in Westminster? What does the future of the relationship between the Westminster and Holyrood governments look like and what opportunities are there for the two governments to work together? How will the SNP make the case for independence under new leadership? \nTo explore these questions\, the Institute for Government is delighted to welcome Stephen Flynn\, the SNP’s leader in Westminster\, to give a keynote speech. \nThe event will be chaired by Hannah White\, Director of the Institute for Government. \nFollow us @ifgevents and join the conversation using #IfGFlynn. \nhttps://www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk/event/stephen-flynn-snp-westminster-leader?utm_source=tuesday_weekly_newsletter&utm_medium=apr_19_2023_wed_newsletter_title&utm_campaign=apr_19_2023_wed_newsletter&inf_contact_key=474089bee3d70d65b244bdd613eb7ee9842e902fbefb79ab9abae13bfcb46658 \n

SUMMARY:MPs debate Brexit impact on UK
DESCRIPTION:he Petitions Committee has scheduled a debate on a petition relating to the impact of the UK’s exit from the European Union. Nick Fletcher MP\, a member of the Petitions Committee\, has been asked by the Committee to open the debate. The Government will send a Minister to respond. Read the relevant petition: https://petition.parliament.uk/petiti… Find petitions you agree with\, and sign them: https://petition.parliament.uk/ What are petitions debates? Petitions debates are ‘general’ debates which allow MPs from all parties to discuss the important issues raised by one or more petitions\, and put their concerns to Government Ministers. Petition debates don’t end with a vote to implement the request of a petition. This means that MPs will not vote on the World Health Organization treaty on pandemic prevention\, preparedness and response at the end of the debate. SUMMARY:Labour and Europe: EMiS webinar
DESCRIPTION:Opinion polls are pointing to a majority Labour government emerging from the next UK general election in 2024/5 – and a surge in both support for rejoining the EU and regret over Brexit. \nBrexit is widely seen as a root cause of the UK’s current economic ills – and likely to blight its performance in future despite what ministers in the Sunak government say. But Labour under Keir Starmer is dead-set against reversing Brexit or even rejoining the EU single market/customs union. \nTo examine why and what Starmer and David Lammy\, shadow foreign secretary\, mean by “fixing the UK’s tarnished relationship with the EU”\, we’re joined by: \n\nDianne (Baroness) Hayter\, former shadow deputy leader in the House of Lords and co-editor of the Forgotten Tribe\, a recent book on the UK’s MEPs;\nIan Murray\, Labour MP for Edinburgh South and shadow Scottish Secretary;\nDenis MacShane\, former Labour Minister for Europe and author of Brexiternity: the Uncertain Fate of Britain.\n\nThe event will be moderated by Mark Lazarowicz\, ex-EMiS chair and former Labour MP for Edinburgh North & Leith. Please register to receive the Zoom link. \nThe event will be recorded\, you can catch up later here. \n

DESCRIPTION:How have the EU and the UK responded to this crisis and what does it mean for their current/future defence co-operation?\n\n\n\nThe first anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine\, a flagrant violation of a sovereign nation’s territorial integrity and Europe’s peace and security order\, could be the prelude to huge new spring offensives by both sides. \nHow have the EU and the UK responded to this crisis and what does it mean for their current/future defence co-operation? Will it propel a European defence union? \nJoin us to discuss these and other foreign and security policy issues with: \n\nJuliet Kaarbo\, Professor of Foreign Policy at the University of Edinburgh and Co-director of the Scottish Council on Global Affairs;\nChristos Katsioulis\, head of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung for Co-operation and Peace in Vienna and author of numerous books on defence issues;\nStephen Gethins\, Professor of Practice in International Relations at St Andrew’s University and former SNP Commons spokesman on Europe.\n\nThis keynote debate will be chaired by European Movement in Scotland (EMiS) executive member and former EU Correspondent David Gow. \nMore details and registration here (you’ll be sent a zoom link after registration).
