SUMMARY:UK trade trajectory post-Brexit: Resolution Foundation
DESCRIPTION:Brexit was a seismic break for the UK\, not least in bringing to a close a decades long trade strategy focused on integration with European markets. Since then the Government has successfully rushed to sign as many trade agreements as possible\, but these largely roll over arrangements inherited from EU membership\, with little prospect of further significant trading ties. It is far from clear what comes next — what a lasting post-Brexit trade strategy for the UK might be that recognises both our economy’s strengths\, and the wider global trade landscape where geopolitics is playing an increasing role. \nWhat are the priorities for the UK’s trade strategy now that the heat of Brexit negotiations have cooled\, but global trade tensions are heating up? How should that strategy be integrated into a wider economic strategy for Britain? Which balance should be struck between a European or global focus? And can Britain protect manufacturing industries such as automotives\, which are highly integrated into European supply chains\, while ensuring the opportunities from faster growing service trade are seized? \nThe Resolution Foundation is hosting an in-person and interactive hybrid event – as part of The Economy 2030 Inquiry\, funded by the Nuffield Foundation – to debate and answer these questions. Following a presentation of highlights from major new research assessing what the UK’s new trade strategy should focus on\, we will hear from leading experts on the trade-offs involved in taking a new direction on trade. \nThe event will be open for people to physically attend\, alongside being broadcast via YouTube and the Resolution Foundation website. Viewers will be able to submit questions to the panel before and during the event via Slido.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDate and Time\nThursday 15 June 2023\n10:15 – 11:45am \nRegister to receive access link.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\nAlan Beattie\nSenior Trade Writer at the Financial Times\nSally Jones\nTrade Strategy & Brexit Leader at EY UK\nAnand Menon\nDirector of UK in a Changing Europe\nSophie Hale\nPrincipal Economist at the Resolution Foundation\nTorsten Bell\nChief Executive of the Resolution Foundation (Chair)

SUMMARY:How do you achieve safe passage? Aspen Institute
DESCRIPTION:Both the government and the refugee advocacy sector are calling for more safe routes for people seeking asylum to enter the UK. But tens of thousands of refugees continue to arrive by unsafe means every year because they are unable to access safe passage. The current UK refugee and asylum system affords different rights and services to refugees’ and asylum seekers’ depending on how they arrive in the country. The Illegal Migration Bill currently being debated in Parliament aims to make it impossible to claim asylum in the UK if you enter the country via irregular means. \nFor the next conversation in our series ‘Voices from a broken system: Rethinking refugee integration in the UK’\, we will focus on how to ensure safe passage for refugees from different countries looking to find sanctuary in the UK. How  can we create more safe routes that are fairer\, based on refugees’ needs for protection\, and improve long-term integration outcomes? And\, how can we be confident those who come here are in need of protection? \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nModerated by:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMartine Dennis – Senior international News Anchor and Journalist\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn the panel:\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLord David Blunkett – Member of the House of Lords and former Labour Home Secretary\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDavid Goodhart – Head of Demography\, Immigration\, and Integration Unit at Policy Exchange\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEnver Solomon – Chief Executive Officer of Refugee Council\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJacqueline Broadhead – Director of the Global Exchange on Migration and Diversity\, University of Oxford\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister now

As our Chair\, Stella Creasy\, recently argued in parliament \n“The truth is that we know what damage Brexit is doing to our country\, and we have seen it for years. Members have already talked about many of the impacts\, including the shortages of people working in our hospitality industry and in health and social care; the blunt economic damage; the thousands of small businesses in constituencies across this country that have just given up trading—one of the truisms here is that people can fight many battles in life\, but they cannot fight geography—because being able to trade just as easily with 500 million consumers on our doorstep does make a difference; the supply chains that have been severed by our leaving the European Union; the wealth of paperwork that so many people now face; and the impact that it has had on the cost of living.” \nThis members event will be your opportunity to hear first hand from Darren about the work of his committee on this issue. We will also be discussing how you can help the work the Labour Movement for Europe is doing within the Labour movement to campaign for action to help British businesses facing the bills of Brexit. \n\n\n\n\nClick here to register for the Darren Jones Seminar\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:The failure of Remain: London4Europe
DESCRIPTION:Adam Fagan and Stijn van Kessel have written a book discussing how Remain failed\, You may of may not agree with their arguments and conclusions\, but I bet you find something to stimulate you one way or the other in this event. \nStudies of the United Kingdom’s decision to leave the European Union (“Brexit”) have largely focused on the role of politicians and political parties or the characteristics of Leave and Remain voters. The Failure of Remain offers the first comprehensive study of the UK’s grassroots anti-Brexit movement. Emerging in the weeks and months following the June 2016 referendum\, this movement was the most significant and wide-scale mobilization of proEuropean support that the UK had ever witnessed. \nIn ‘The Failure of Remain’\, Adam Fagan and Stijn van Kessel assessed participants’ ideologies\, arguments\, and strategies. Drawing evidence from first-hand interviews\, an original survey of anti-Brexit activists\, and an analysis of their campaign materials\, Fagan and van Kessel conclude that\, while the anti-Brexit movement was successful in mobilizing a large number of pro-European citizens\, its impact was limited by weak links to political elites and institutions\, divisions between organizations and activists\, and the absence of a clear stance on the UK’s relationship with the European Union. \nThe Failure of Remain reveals the difficulties of formulating effective pro-European arguments. What lessons for the future can be gleaned from past experiences? What can be learned for campaigns for an ever-closer relationship with the EU and ultimately to Rejoin it? \nAdam Fagan – Professor of European Politics at King’s College London and senior editor of East European Politics.\nStijn van Kessel – Reader (Associate Professor) in European Politics\, School of Politics and International Relations\, Queen Mary University of London. \nDate: 27th April\nTime: 18:45 \nRegistration: https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_OhtIHYejQLufB3EQcCZ51w

SUMMARY:MPs debate Brexit impact on UK
DESCRIPTION:he Petitions Committee has scheduled a debate on a petition relating to the impact of the UK’s exit from the European Union. Nick Fletcher MP\, a member of the Petitions Committee\, has been asked by the Committee to open the debate. The Government will send a Minister to respond. Read the relevant petition: https://petition.parliament.uk/petiti… Find petitions you agree with\, and sign them: https://petition.parliament.uk/ What are petitions debates? Petitions debates are ‘general’ debates which allow MPs from all parties to discuss the important issues raised by one or more petitions\, and put their concerns to Government Ministers. Petition debates don’t end with a vote to implement the request of a petition. This means that MPs will not vote on the World Health Organization treaty on pandemic prevention\, preparedness and response at the end of the debate. Katy will look at the Protocol from a slightly different perspective\, drawing on close monitoring of the Protocol’s development and implementation. She will show why the Protocol should be a concern to the public in Great Britain because of what it seeks to protect\, because of the way it has been handled\, and because what happens to it in future – for good or ill – will have implications for the whole of the United Kingdom. \nMore details and registration here.
