But as the “Father of Capitalism” his pioneering work on free market economics has influenced politicians\, philosophers and economists throughout the 19th\, 20th and 21st centuries too. \nBut modern Britain – as well as other advanced economies – is struggling with economic stagnation. Many people are questioning the central tenants of capitalism that Smith championed – from free trade and globalisation to regulation and the role of the state – and whether they can deliver the living standards growth that people need. What lessons can we learn from Adam Smith on the economic challenges facing Britain today? \nTo mark the 300th anniversary of the birth of Adam Smith\, the Resolution Foundation is co-hosting an event with the Society of Professional Economists to discuss what his work can teach us about the economic challenges of Britain today. DESCRIPTION:This month’s (Wed 6 Sept) WWW WorldWide Wednesday looks at activism\, campaigning and levelling up. Our two invited WWW  experts will provide valuable insights into why activists should embrace defeat and failure as the path to campaign success\, plus look at the potential impact of levelling up on our cities and regions. The September (Wed 6 Sept) #WWW WorldWideWednesday speakers are: \nDr Danny Rye is Associate Professor of Politics at Liverpool Hope University with research interests in party politics and local activism. In particular\, Danny has a developing interest in how small-scale\, local and individual actions can make a valuable contribution to a thriving civil society. Danny’s current research is on how we understand ‘success’ in activism and its value to activists themselves as well as society more widely. Danny is a regular commentator on British politics on BBC Radio and Television. His spare time and money is mainly spent in record shops. \nDr Neil Pye is a historian and political scientist specialising in British Politics at the University of Liverpool. Neil is a member of the Political Studies Association specialist group on Local Politics and Governance. Neil has written about Chartism and the nineteenth-century British State; the post-war history of the Labour Party including the Militant Tendency in Liverpool\, and about devolution and local governance in James Callaghan: An Underrated Prime Minister. Neil’s specialist fields are Metro Mayors\, English Devolution\, British political parties and ideologies\, along with European Union and German politics. Neil served as a borough councillor in West Lancashire from 2011-15\, and was proactive in delivering the highly-successful Findon and Firbeck housing regeneration scheme in Skelmersdale. Since 2017\, Neil is a prominent voice in local government politics in North West England\, campaigning on environmental matters\, plus supporting Devolution and Metro Mayors. As a proud European\, Neil frequently chairs WWW Worldwide Wednesday events for the EMM European Movement Merseyside [LCR Liverpool City Region]. \nChair: Paul Boyd consults\, advises\, trains and supports teachers. An experienced teacher of design\, engineering\, ICT\, graphic products\, resistant materials\, textiles and CAD/CAM\, electronics\, systems and control\, Paul is a STEM Ambassadorand lead mentor in the DfE Department for Education 3D printers into schools programme. Paul has worked as Ofqual subject advisor for electronics\, and was a senior lecturer at NTU Nottingham Trent University responsible for engineering teacher training where he was nominated as an outstanding lecturer. Paul has taught in secondary schools\, holding leadership roles as Head of Department\, Director of Learning and as a senior leader\, including in challenging schools. With extensive industrial experience as a watchmaker\, retail buyer\, quality control manager\, and retail manager\, Paul understands both the public and private sector. Paul is a skilled communicator with an outstanding knowledge of pedagogy and motivating learners. SUMMARY:Scotland wants to rejoin the EU: what's the best route?
DESCRIPTION:Scotland would rejoin the EU tomorrow if asked – but how? \nAs many as 60% of UK voters now back rejoining the EU as the daily evidence of the damage brought by Brexit mounts. Scotland would vote around 3-1 to rejoin. So\, what’s the best way forward for pro-Europeans in Scotland: rejoin as part of the UK or as an independent EU member state? There are plenty of arguments about the merits and disadvantages of both approaches. \nJoin us on August 8 at 1800 for a conversation on the issues involved between two leading pro-EU political figures in Scotland – Eddie Barnes and Stephen Gethins. Their online discussion\, bound to be riveting\, will set the tone for the start of a new political season and will be chaired by David Gow\, ex-Guardian journalist who leads the RSE’s Scotland-Europe Initiative. \nEddie Barnes is the campaign director of Our Scottish Future\, the group/think tank set up by Gordon Brown. He is a former political editor at the Scotsman and was a senior aide and speechwriter to Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson. He has also advised UK prime ministers on the reform of the UK state. \nStephen Gethins is Professor of Practice in International Relations at St Andrews University and an EMiS executive member. The two August (Wed 2 Aug) #WWW WorldWideWednesday speakers are: \nTom Brake is the Director of Unlock Democracy. Tom joined the organisation after twenty-two years as a Member of Parliament\, where he was active in pushing for democratic reform\, including extending Freedom of Information (FOI) laws to private companies like Serco and Capita when they undertake work for the public sector\, defending UK elections from foreign interference\, and for votes at 16. Tom has held a number of key positions in the Liberal Democrats and was appointed a Privy Counsellor in 2011Deputy Leader of the House of Commons in October 2012 and an Assistant Government Whip in November 2014. \nDirk Hazell graduated form the University of Cambridge and qualified as a barrister. Dirk wrote what became the template for the European Communities’ 1992 single market programme. Dirk led the euro-capital market through the first wave of EU sectoral legislation and then the environmental services sector through the Sixth Environment Action Programme. Dirk chaired the Conservative Party’s Foreign Affairs Forum and London Region\, but left the party when it left the mainstream centre-right EPP European People’s Party. In 2012\, Dirk co-founded the UK EPP which he now leads. Dirk is also Chair of Federal Union (founded in 1938) which was credited by the only British President of the European Commission as having made possible the UK’s Accession to the EC in 1973. \nChair: Dr Neil Pye is a historian and political scientist specialising in British Politics at the University of Liverpool. George was responsible for the EU’s 2021 Strategy for Cooperation in the Indo-Pacific\, the EU Alternate Senior Official for the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) and EU Governor of the Asia-Europe Foundation. Previously George served as Deputy EU Ambassador to Afghanistan\, was posted in New Zealand\, Cyprus and New York\, and led on China and EU-US trade relations. George served in the first decade of his career in the British army\, went on a two-year expedition in Africa\, worked for British Petroleum and British Telecom\, ran an NGO and served as a United Nations official before joining the EU. George has been involved in politics since his departure from the EU. George is Chair of Liberal Democrats Abroad Steering Committee\, and the Chair of the party’s subcommittee on China. George is a Council Member at the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats in Europe (ALDE)and a member of Liberal International’s Fair Trade Working Group. George stood as a Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate in the 2015 UK General Election. \nRoland Freudenstein is an international speaker\, writer\, and researcher. Roland is Vice President and Head of GLOBSEC Brussels. Previously and since 2008\, Roland was Policy Director of the WMCES Wilfried Martens Centre for European Studies\, the think tank of the EPP European People’s Party in Brussels. Roland has extensive experience and knowledge of the think tank world (German Council on Foreign Relations)\, global democracy support (Konrad Adenauer Foundation) and public service (European Commission and Hamburg State Government). Roland is a specialist on European integration and international security\, staunch advocate of the West and critic of the Kremlin’s aggression. \nJeremy Lefroy‘s work centres on smallholder agriculture in Africa; supporting growth of jobs and livelihoods in the UK and East Africa; and working with partners to tackle infectious diseases. From 2010-2019 Jeremy was the UK Member of Parliament (Conservative – Stafford)\, where he was a member of the International Development\, Joint Human Rights and Exiting the EU Committees. Jeremy also served as a Trustee of the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (2015-2023) and the Conservative Christian Fellowship. Jeremy chairs the boards of the Relationships Foundation\, Equity for Tanzania and Staffordshire Enterprise\, co-chairs the Kenya UK Health Alliance\, is a Trustee of the Innovative Vector Control Consortium (IVCC)\, and is Executive Director of Café Africa. Jeremy is a Fellow of the ICAEW Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. DESCRIPTION:Brexit was a seismic break for the UK\, not least in bringing to a close a decades long trade strategy focused on integration with European markets. Since then the Government has successfully rushed to sign as many trade agreements as possible\, but these largely roll over arrangements inherited from EU membership\, with little prospect of further significant trading ties. It is far from clear what comes next — what a lasting post-Brexit trade strategy for the UK might be that recognises both our economy’s strengths\, and the wider global trade landscape where geopolitics is playing an increasing role. \nWhat are the priorities for the UK’s trade strategy now that the heat of Brexit negotiations have cooled\, but global trade tensions are heating up? How should that strategy be integrated into a wider economic strategy for Britain? Which balance should be struck between a European or global focus? And can Britain protect manufacturing industries such as automotives\, which are highly integrated into European supply chains\, while ensuring the opportunities from faster growing service trade are seized? \nThe Resolution Foundation is hosting an in-person and interactive hybrid event – as part of The Economy 2030 Inquiry\, funded by the Nuffield Foundation – to debate and answer these questions. Our WWW will examine human\, economic and political costs of Brexit. – The three #WWWWorldWideWednesday speakers are:\nCosi Doerfel-Hill is behind the event Global Liverpool celebrating Liverpool’s international roots and routes to this welcoming city of refuge. Cosi was born in Munich\, studied in London\, and graduated from the University of Liverpool. In 2017\, Cosi helped Elena Remigi publish the book In Limbo: Brexit testimonies from EU citizens in the UK and in 2018 In Limbo Too: Brexit testimonies from UK citizens in the EU. From late 2018\, Cosi monitored the rollout of the EUSS Settlement Scheme on behalf of the3million\, then spent two years running a project to help vulnerable EU citizens make EUSS applications until the deadline in June 2021\, and has continued working in the advice sector ever since.\nStewart Fleming is a freelance journalist who grew up on The Wirral. After graduating from the University of Cambridge\, Stewart trained with the Bootle Times\, Crosby Herald\, and Formby Times. Stewart has worked for the European Voice\, London Evening Standard\, New Statesman\, The Guardian and Financial Times (Bureau Chief in New York and Frankfurt; US Economics Editor 1983-86; US Editor\, Washington DC 1986-90). Stewart is former Senior Member\, St Antony’s College\, Oxford\, and Associate Fellow\, Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House).\nNick Hopkinson chairs the Sir Heinz Koeppler Trust and is the former Director of Wilton Park\, founding Chair of London4Europe and sits on the EM European Movement UK National Council. Nick graduated from Queen’s University and Carleton University in Canada\, and the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in Bologna. Nick is currently writing the soon to be published history of Wilton Park\, the FCDO Foreign Commonwealth & Development Office‘s policy forum. Originally a re-education camp for German officers after World War Two\, Wilton Park has evolved into a global policy forum which has operated in some 50 countries. In 2001\, Nick wrote Parliamentary democracy: is there a perfect model?\nChair: Dirk Hazell graduated form the University of Cambridge and qualified as a barrister. Dirk wrote what became the template for the European Communities’ 1992 single market programme. Dirk led the euro-capital market through the first wave of EU sectoral legislation and then the environmental services sector through the Sixth Environment Action Programme. Dirk chaired the Conservative Party’s Foreign Affairs Forum and London Region\, but left the party when it left the mainstream centre-right EPP European People’s Party. In 2012\, Dirk co-founded the UK EPP which he now leads. DESCRIPTION:Both the government and the refugee advocacy sector are calling for more safe routes for people seeking asylum to enter the UK. But tens of thousands of refugees continue to arrive by unsafe means every year because they are unable to access safe passage. The current UK refugee and asylum system affords different rights and services to refugees’ and asylum seekers’ depending on how they arrive in the country. The Illegal Migration Bill currently being debated in Parliament aims to make it impossible to claim asylum in the UK if you enter the country via irregular means. \nFor the next conversation in our series ‘Voices from a broken system: Rethinking refugee integration in the UK’\, we will focus on how to ensure safe passage for refugees from different countries looking to find sanctuary in the UK. DESCRIPTION:I am writing to invite you to join us at our conference “European Citizens in Scotland”\, which will take place in Edinburgh\, on the morning of Tuesday 9 May. \nThis event will be held in person\, and will look at the contribution EU and other European citizens make to Scotland\, and highlight the key issues and future prospects for those European communities in Scotland. \nThe topics that the conference will cover will include: \n\nThe make-up of the European citizens’ community in Scotland (numbers\, nationality\, location\, immigration status\, participation in the democratic process)\nThe experiences of migrants living in Scotland accessing benefits and other forms of support\, with particular reference to EU citizens with pre-settled status\nThe experience of young EU citizens in Scotland after Brexit\nThe lessons of the Covid-19 experience for future policy on improving service provision for migrant and minority ethnic communities in Scotland generally\nThe contribution European citizens make to Scotland’s community and society.\n\nThere will also be a presentation on the EU UK Youth Stronger Together project\, co-funded by the European Union\, which offers young people aged 15 – 30 from the EU and the UK opportunities to connect\, cooperate\, influence\, and implement change together on issues of common interest. \nWe will also give a short presentation on the future programme and plans of the Citizens Rights Project. \nDetails of the programme for the day\, and our speakers\, are given in the Eventbrite link for the event\, see here. DESCRIPTION:Adam Fagan and Stijn van Kessel have written a book discussing how Remain failed\, You may of may not agree with their arguments and conclusions\, but I bet you find something to stimulate you one way or the other in this event. \nStudies of the United Kingdom’s decision to leave the European Union (“Brexit”) have largely focused on the role of politicians and political parties or the characteristics of Leave and Remain voters. The Failure of Remain offers the first comprehensive study of the UK’s grassroots anti-Brexit movement. Emerging in the weeks and months following the June 2016 referendum\, this movement was the most significant and wide-scale mobilization of proEuropean support that the UK had ever witnessed. \nIn ‘The Failure of Remain’\, Adam Fagan and Stijn van Kessel assessed participants’ ideologies\, arguments\, and strategies. Drawing evidence from first-hand interviews\, an original survey of anti-Brexit activists\, and an analysis of their campaign materials\, Fagan and van Kessel conclude that\, while the anti-Brexit movement was successful in mobilizing a large number of pro-European citizens\, its impact was limited by weak links to political elites and institutions\, divisions between organizations and activists\, and the absence of a clear stance on the UK’s relationship with the European Union. \nThe Failure of Remain reveals the difficulties of formulating effective pro-European arguments. What lessons for the future can be gleaned from past experiences?
