SUMMARY:Freedom of movement: the key to rejoin
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nWhy is Freedom of Movement so important? \nHow do we explain this to our fellow citizens? \nMutual Freedom of Movement is the gateway to rejoining the EU. Freedom of movement of people (along with free movement of goods\, services\, and capital)\, is a fundamental principle of the EU Single Market. There can be no return to the Single Market or the EU without FoM. Any campaign to rejoin the Single Market or the EU must convince the government to embrace the return of FoM. But FoM is currently rejected by both Conservatives and Labour\, who say that FoM of people has been abolished “once and for all”. \nOpposition to FoM is based on a mistaken belief that FoM means uncontrolled immigration. The public is not well informed on this issue\, a factor which greatly assisted the leave campaign. People are now becoming more aware that ending FoM affects their own and their families’ choices\, as well as undermining the UK economy\, impacting the workforce in key industries\, impeding business travel and decimating the arts. FoM is strongly supported by the public in all EU member states. \nThe aim of this webinar is to equip pro-EU activists for a campaign to restore FoM\, and so open the door to Single Market and EU membership. We will cover three strands of the campaign: debunking myths\, a positive narrative\, and the dos and don’ts of persuasive communicating. \nThe webinar will provide the basis for a crib sheet for FoM campaigners.

SUMMARY:EU after the watershed
DESCRIPTION:The EU faces multiple challenges\, both internally and externally\, so what does its future hold and is it still the right answer after the watershed? \n\n\nThe European Union has been going through enormous changes. Driven by the Permacrisis – an extended period of insecurity and instability – fundamental transformations in technology\, sustainability and demography and the watershed moment of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine\, security\, particularly economic security\, is now firmly back on the agenda. \n\n\nThe EU will have to continue to change and adapt to address this triple challenge. But this must happen in the difficult context of both internal and external fragmentation and polarisation. \n\n\nWhat does this imply for the future of the EU? Is the EU moving from being a community of values enshrined in law to a confederation of interest driven by Realpolitik? And is the EU still the right answer to today’s changed environment? \n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr Fabian Zuleeg\n\n\n\n\nSPEAKER \n\n\nDr Fabian Zuleeg\n\n\nChief Executive\, European Policy Centre \n\n\nSince October 2013\, Dr Fabian Zuleeg has been Chief Executive of the European Policy Centre\, with overall responsibility\, including providing strategic direction\, managing its staff and resources and representing the EPC. He remains Chief Economist. Fabian holds a PhD from Edinburgh University and has worked in academia\, the public and the private sector. He focuses on the future of European integration and how Europe can meet the triple challenge of the watershed of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine\, the fundamental transformations and the Permacrisis. He coined this term with EPC colleagues in 2021 in the context of internal political dis-cohesion and a contested global landscape. Fabian also focuses on transnational cooperation between European Think Tanks. \n\n\n\n\n\nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/x/eu-after-the-watershed-beyond-interdependence-online-tickets-721897192937?aff=eemailordconf&ref=eemailordconf&utm_campaign=order_confirm&utm_medium=email&utm_source=eventbrite&app_cta_src=order_conf_email&utm_term=digitalx\n\n\n\n\nBOOK NOW\, IN PERSON \nBOOK NOW\, ONLINE

SUMMARY:Wealth of a nation: Scotland
DESCRIPTION:Record low interest rates over the past 30 years led to a wealth boom\, with Scottish households seeing wealth rise by £700 billion since the financial crisis alone. But surging interest rates in 2022 have brought this era to an abrupt end\, causing pension valuations to crater\, mortgage costs to rise\, and house prices to fall. Who holds this wealth\, where they live and how their wealth is likely to evolve in the coming years has profound implications for politics and policy in Scotland. \nHow is wealth distributed across the nations of the UK and what determines its variation? How is Scotland likely to be affected by the outlook for asset prices and interest rates in the years ahead? And what actions should policy makers in Scotland be considering in a world of falling wealth\, but large wealth gaps? \nThe Resolution Foundation is hosting an in-person event in Edinburgh – as part of our ongoing wealth across Britain project\, in partnership with the abrdn Financial Fairness Trust – to debate and explore these questions. Following a presentation of new research\, which will examine regional and national wealth trends across the UK\, we will hear from leading experts on what the changing scale and nature of wealth in Scotland means for policy and politics. \nThe event will be open for people to physically attend\, alongside being broadcast via YouTube and the Resolution Foundation website. Viewers will be able to submit questions to the panel before and during the event via Slido.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDate and Time\nMonday 30 October 2023\n1:30 – 2:45pm\nRefreshments from 1pm. \nRegister to receive access link.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER NOW\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\nJohn Curtice\nProfessor of Politics at Strathclyde University \nLiz Lloyd\nFormer Chief of Staff to Nicola Sturgeon \nKezia Dugdale\nFormer Leader of the Scottish Labour Party \nIan Mulheirn\nResearch Associate at the Resolution Foundation \nTorsten Bell (Chair)\nChief Executive of the Resolution Foundation

SUMMARY:Scotland WITHIN UK - or UK WITHOUT Scotland?
DESCRIPTION:In the referendum on Scottish independence held in 2014\, the Scottish clearly rejected the idea of their country becoming an independent country by 55.3% to 44.7%.  Nevertheless\, for the Scottish National Party\, who dream of Scotland as a separate sovereign state\, if possible within the European Union\,  that disappointing result is still not the end of the story. The demands for a second referendum – “IndyRef2” – have not dwindled\, even though the opinion polls give a relatively unclear picture of what might happen in the Scottish people had a second chance. \nTo provide up-to-date background information on this question\, we have invited two guest speakers: Kirsty Hughes from the Scottish Centre on European Relations and Mark Lazarowicz\, a British lawyer who was a Labour MP in the Westminster government for many years to throw some light on the various aspects of this issue\, such as: Could there be a second referendum? What would the consequences be for the United Kingdom? Could Scotland become a member state of the European Union? \nThe online event is organized by Europe Direct Dortmund and the Anglo-German-Association in Auslandsgesellschaft.de. \nZoom-Link: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/81189433085?pwd=PKuOHeT0JnwxfJXAbgGcN9s05YWaa3.1 \nMeeting-ID: 811 8943 3085\nKenncode: 727375 (password)

SUMMARY:Brexit: a failed project in a failing state
DESCRIPTION:Another Europe Is Possible\n\nBrexit has failed to address any of the substantive challenges of the day\, but it was not a ‘year zero’ for the many problems facing the United Kingdom and\, in fact\, reflected decades of public policy failure. That’s the argument of Oxford University professor Danny Dorling in his provocative new report\, Brexit: a failed project in a failing state\, published by the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung and Another Europe Is Possible. \nJoin AEIP at the report launch in person or online on Wednesday 25 October\, 6pm BST to discuss how we can organise to fight government failure and overturn the consequences of years of destructive policy. \nThe in-person event takes place from 6pm on Wed 25 Oct at Room 1.08 Marshall Building\, London School of Economics and Political Science\, Lincoln Inn Fields London WC2A 3LY. \nHear from: \nDanny Dorling (@dannydorling) is the Halford Mackinder Professor in the School of Geography and the Environment at the University of Oxford. He is the author of Inequality and the 1%\, third edition published in autumn 2019. His most recent book is Shattered Nation; Inequality and the Geography of A Failing State (Verso Books\, 2023). His report\, Brexit: a failed project in a failing state? is published by the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung and Another Europe Is Possible. \nZoe Williams (@zoesqwilliams) is a Guardian journalist\, the author of Get It Together: Why We Deserve Better Politics (Hutchinson\, 2016) and the co-host of the Another Europe Is Possible podcast. \nLuke Cooper (@lukecooper100) is an Associate Professorial Research Fellow in International Relations at LSE IDEAS\, LSE’s in-house foreign policy think tank and director of PeaceRep’s Ukraine programme. He is a co-host of the Another Europe podcast\, and presented Between Dream and Tragedy; Europe’s Story After 1989\, a six-part podcast documentary on European history. His book Authoritarian Contagion: The Global Threat to Democracy was published by Bristol University Press in 2021. \nZoom Ticket: https://lse.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMlcuGvrTwtG9CGJPWzO9cr2k3ANNXM2aRH#/registration \nIn Person Ticket: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/brexit-a-failed-project-in-a-failing-state-tickets-726025721477?aff=oddtdtcreator

Whether because of Brexit or because of external events\, rapid reform for the EU\, its policies and its institutions is the order of the day in Brussels. The Federal Trust and James Madison Charitable Trust are jointly organising this one-day conference to consider what a reformed European Union will look like in 2033. \nThe agenda of the conference will revolve around four central topics\, the EU as a geopolitical actor\, the EU’s economic future\, the EU’s democratic legitimacy and the EU’s environmental policies. Expert speakers will lead the discussion of these topics in separate sessions\, during which there will be ample time for the audience to contribute its views and questions. The conference will not aim to predict in detail the EU’s future development. It will seek rather to analyse the challenges and options that decision-makers in the EU will face in the coming years. \nParticipation in the conference is free but registration is required. SUMMARY:Edinburgh Euro Walk for EU Citizens' Rights
DESCRIPTION:We are the Citizens Rights Project\, the leading organization in Scotland for all EU nationals in need to secure their rights. \nWe are organizing a fundraising walk around those sights and locations in Edinburgh that highlight the historical contributions European citizens have made to Scotland/ the historical links among European Citizens and Scotland. \nWe will be visiting places around central Edinburgh\, some of which are already known for their European connections\, and some others which you may never have realized are interlinked to European heritage/ history. \nAmongst the places we will visit are ones with a connection with France\, Netherlands\, Poland\, Switzerland\, Norway\, Spain\, Germany\, Spain\, Belgium\, Italy\, Ukraine\, and Portugal – and perhaps a few other countries as well! You can do the walk in a group led by our expert guide\, or on your own with our self-guided route. \nIt won’t all be about dry historical details- we will also be visiting locations with a contemporary European vibe! \n  \nThe total duration of the walk will be about one and a half hours\, which will allow a reasonably leisurely walk. The entire route can be undertaken ‘step-free’. \n(In the event of bad weather\, the route may be varied). \nThe charge for each participant is £10\, and all money raised will go directly to the Citizens’ Rights Project. Find more information about the work of the Citizens Rights Project here: https://citizensrightsproject.org/ \nWe will meet at 11 am on Saturday 14 October\, at a central Edinburgh location. Details will be provided to those who book a place. The start and end points are both less than 15 minutes’ walk from Edinburgh Waverley station\, with good bus and cycle links also. \nSign up here

SUMMARY:Enlightened economics
DESCRIPTION:Lessons from Adam Smith on the economic challenges facing modern Britain\n\n\n\n\nJesse Norman MP in conversation with Amanda Rowlatt\nRegister to attend in person or to receive an access link for online viewers. \nAdam Smith was a leading political economy thinker of the Scottish enlightenment in the mid-late 18th century. But as the “Father of Capitalism” his pioneering work on free market economics has influenced politicians\, philosophers and economists throughout the 19th\, 20th and 21st centuries too. \nBut modern Britain – as well as other advanced economies – is struggling with economic stagnation. Many people are questioning the central tenants of capitalism that Smith championed – from free trade and globalisation to regulation and the role of the state – and whether they can deliver the living standards growth that people need. What lessons can we learn from Adam Smith on the economic challenges facing Britain today? \nTo mark the 300th anniversary of the birth of Adam Smith\, the Resolution Foundation is co-hosting an event with the Society of Professional Economists to discuss what his work can teach us about the economic challenges of Britain today. We will be joined by one of the leading experts on Adam Smith\, Minister and author Jesse Norman MP. \nThe event will be open for people to physically attend\, alongside being broadcast via YouTube and the Resolution Foundation website. Viewers will be able to submit questions to the panel before and during the event via Slido. \n\n\n\n\n\nEvent Signup\n

SUMMARY:Scotland wants to rejoin the EU: what's the best route?
DESCRIPTION:Scotland would rejoin the EU tomorrow if asked – but how? \nAs many as 60% of UK voters now back rejoining the EU as the daily evidence of the damage brought by Brexit mounts. Scotland would vote around 3-1 to rejoin. So\, what’s the best way forward for pro-Europeans in Scotland: rejoin as part of the UK or as an independent EU member state? There are plenty of arguments about the merits and disadvantages of both approaches. \nJoin us on August 8 at 1800 for a conversation on the issues involved between two leading pro-EU political figures in Scotland – Eddie Barnes and Stephen Gethins. Their online discussion\, bound to be riveting\, will set the tone for the start of a new political season and will be chaired by David Gow\, ex-Guardian journalist who leads the RSE’s Scotland-Europe Initiative. \nEddie Barnes is the campaign director of Our Scottish Future\, the group/think tank set up by Gordon Brown. He is a former political editor at the Scotsman and was a senior aide and speechwriter to Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson. He has also advised UK prime ministers on the reform of the UK state. \nStephen Gethins is Professor of Practice in International Relations at St Andrews University and an EMiS executive member. He is the former SNP MP for North-East Fife and spokesperson on Europe and International Affairs\, sitting on the Commons foreign affairs select committee. \nAttendance is free for anyone\, but please register to receive the link.

SUMMARY:Ukrainian refugees' future in the UK: Aspen Institute
DESCRIPTION:The UK’s response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine saw over 200\,000 visas being issued and more than 150\,000 Ukrainians arriving in the UK. We will be bringing together policymakers\, community advocates\, and people with lived experience for a discussion about this complex problem. What options will be available to Ukrainians once their visas expire?  And\, how can Ukrainian refugees navigate and reconcile the uncertainties regarding their eventual return or long-term settlement? \n\nPanel to be announced soon! \nDoors open at 18:00 with the panel discussion starting at 18:30 and a reception from 20:30 onwards. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:UK trade trajectory post-Brexit: Resolution Foundation
DESCRIPTION:Brexit was a seismic break for the UK\, not least in bringing to a close a decades long trade strategy focused on integration with European markets. Since then the Government has successfully rushed to sign as many trade agreements as possible\, but these largely roll over arrangements inherited from EU membership\, with little prospect of further significant trading ties. It is far from clear what comes next — what a lasting post-Brexit trade strategy for the UK might be that recognises both our economy’s strengths\, and the wider global trade landscape where geopolitics is playing an increasing role. \nWhat are the priorities for the UK’s trade strategy now that the heat of Brexit negotiations have cooled\, but global trade tensions are heating up? How should that strategy be integrated into a wider economic strategy for Britain? Which balance should be struck between a European or global focus? And can Britain protect manufacturing industries such as automotives\, which are highly integrated into European supply chains\, while ensuring the opportunities from faster growing service trade are seized? \nThe Resolution Foundation is hosting an in-person and interactive hybrid event – as part of The Economy 2030 Inquiry\, funded by the Nuffield Foundation – to debate and answer these questions. Following a presentation of highlights from major new research assessing what the UK’s new trade strategy should focus on\, we will hear from leading experts on the trade-offs involved in taking a new direction on trade. \nThe event will be open for people to physically attend\, alongside being broadcast via YouTube and the Resolution Foundation website. Viewers will be able to submit questions to the panel before and during the event via Slido.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDate and Time\nThursday 15 June 2023\n10:15 – 11:45am \nRegister to receive access link.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\nAlan Beattie\nSenior Trade Writer at the Financial Times\nSally Jones\nTrade Strategy & Brexit Leader at EY UK\nAnand Menon\nDirector of UK in a Changing Europe\nSophie Hale\nPrincipal Economist at the Resolution Foundation\nTorsten Bell\nChief Executive of the Resolution Foundation (Chair)
