SUMMARY:Bring back Erasmus+ (Leeds for Europe)
DESCRIPTION:Leeds for Europe are proud to join with Young European Movement UK to present a public meeting exploring the Erasmus+ scheme and what participation would mean for the young people in the UK.\n\nThe UK left the Erasmus+ programme as part of Brexit – and as a result\, snatched vital opportunities away from young people in this country.\n\nErasmus+ gives young people the chance to study\, work and travel across Europe. The Europe-wide programme created countless opportunities for young people in the UK\, as well as bringing talent from other countries into our universities and workplaces. Being outside Erasmus+ puts our country\, and our young people\, at a disadvantage.\n\nThis webinar will feature leading young campaigners who are leading the charge to restore the UK’s place in Erasmus+. \n\nMore details and registration here.

SUMMARY:EU Environmental Policy – its relevance post-Brexit (London4Europe)
DESCRIPTION:Webinar and panel discussion hosted by London4Europe.\n\nSpeaker: Nigel Haigh\, OBE\n\nNigel Haigh is an Honorary Fellow of the Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP)\, and was its Director from 1980 to 1998.\n\nIn his presentation\, Nigel will outline the history of the involvement of the EU in environmental matters\, and the consequences on UK environmental policy of the 2016 referendum result. It is suggested that the biggest long term impact of Brexit concerning environmental policy will be to weaken the UK’s influence on global environmental issues\, which will be most important in the coming decades. Nigel will explain that environmental policy is at the centre of the EU – and not just climate change. It is also a popular subject with the public. SUMMARY:Freedom of movement: the key to rejoin
DESCRIPTION:  \n\nWhy is Freedom of Movement so important? \nHow do we explain this to our fellow citizens? \nMutual Freedom of Movement is the gateway to rejoining the EU. Freedom of movement of people (along with free movement of goods\, services\, and capital)\, is a fundamental principle of the EU Single Market. There can be no return to the Single Market or the EU without FoM. Any campaign to rejoin the Single Market or the EU must convince the government to embrace the return of FoM. But FoM is currently rejected by both Conservatives and Labour\, who say that FoM of people has been abolished “once and for all”. \nOpposition to FoM is based on a mistaken belief that FoM means uncontrolled immigration. The public is not well informed on this issue\, a factor which greatly assisted the leave campaign. People are now becoming more aware that ending FoM affects their own and their families’ choices\, as well as undermining the UK economy\, impacting the workforce in key industries\, impeding business travel and decimating the arts. FoM is strongly supported by the public in all EU member states. \nThe aim of this webinar is to equip pro-EU activists for a campaign to restore FoM\, and so open the door to Single Market and EU membership. We will cover three strands of the campaign: debunking myths\, a positive narrative\, and the dos and don’ts of persuasive communicating. \nThe webinar will provide the basis for a crib sheet for FoM campaigners.

SUMMARY:EU after the watershed
DESCRIPTION:The EU faces multiple challenges\, both internally and externally\, so what does its future hold and is it still the right answer after the watershed? \n\n\nThe European Union has been going through enormous changes. Driven by the Permacrisis – an extended period of insecurity and instability – fundamental transformations in technology\, sustainability and demography and the watershed moment of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine\, security\, particularly economic security\, is now firmly back on the agenda. \n\n\nThe EU will have to continue to change and adapt to address this triple challenge. But this must happen in the difficult context of both internal and external fragmentation and polarisation. \n\n\nWhat does this imply for the future of the EU? Is the EU moving from being a community of values enshrined in law to a confederation of interest driven by Realpolitik? And is the EU still the right answer to today’s changed environment? \n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr Fabian Zuleeg\n\n\n\n\nSPEAKER \n\n\nDr Fabian Zuleeg\n\n\nChief Executive\, European Policy Centre \n\n\nSince October 2013\, Dr Fabian Zuleeg has been Chief Executive of the European Policy Centre\, with overall responsibility\, including providing strategic direction\, managing its staff and resources and representing the EPC. He remains Chief Economist. Fabian holds a PhD from Edinburgh University and has worked in academia\, the public and the private sector. He focuses on the future of European integration and how Europe can meet the triple challenge of the watershed of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine\, the fundamental transformations and the Permacrisis. He coined this term with EPC colleagues in 2021 in the context of internal political dis-cohesion and a contested global landscape. Fabian also focuses on transnational cooperation between European Think Tanks. \n\n\n\n\n\nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/x/eu-after-the-watershed-beyond-interdependence-online-tickets-721897192937?aff=eemailordconf&ref=eemailordconf&utm_campaign=order_confirm&utm_medium=email&utm_source=eventbrite&app_cta_src=order_conf_email&utm_term=digitalx\n\n\n\n\nBOOK NOW\, IN PERSON \nBOOK NOW\, ONLINE

SUMMARY:Wealth of a nation: Scotland
DESCRIPTION:Record low interest rates over the past 30 years led to a wealth boom\, with Scottish households seeing wealth rise by £700 billion since the financial crisis alone. But surging interest rates in 2022 have brought this era to an abrupt end\, causing pension valuations to crater\, mortgage costs to rise\, and house prices to fall. Who holds this wealth\, where they live and how their wealth is likely to evolve in the coming years has profound implications for politics and policy in Scotland. \nHow is wealth distributed across the nations of the UK and what determines its variation? How is Scotland likely to be affected by the outlook for asset prices and interest rates in the years ahead? And what actions should policy makers in Scotland be considering in a world of falling wealth\, but large wealth gaps? \nThe Resolution Foundation is hosting an in-person event in Edinburgh – as part of our ongoing wealth across Britain project\, in partnership with the abrdn Financial Fairness Trust – to debate and explore these questions. Following a presentation of new research\, which will examine regional and national wealth trends across the UK\, we will hear from leading experts on what the changing scale and nature of wealth in Scotland means for policy and politics. \nThe event will be open for people to physically attend\, alongside being broadcast via YouTube and the Resolution Foundation website. Viewers will be able to submit questions to the panel before and during the event via Slido.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDate and Time\nMonday 30 October 2023\n1:30 – 2:45pm\nRefreshments from 1pm. \nRegister to receive access link.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER NOW\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpeakers\nJohn Curtice\nProfessor of Politics at Strathclyde University \nLiz Lloyd\nFormer Chief of Staff to Nicola Sturgeon \nKezia Dugdale\nFormer Leader of the Scottish Labour Party \nIan Mulheirn\nResearch Associate at the Resolution Foundation \nTorsten Bell (Chair)\nChief Executive of the Resolution Foundation

SUMMARY:Scotland WITHIN UK - or UK WITHOUT Scotland?
DESCRIPTION:In the referendum on Scottish independence held in 2014\, the Scottish clearly rejected the idea of their country becoming an independent country by 55.3% to 44.7%.  Nevertheless\, for the Scottish National Party\, who dream of Scotland as a separate sovereign state\, if possible within the European Union\,  that disappointing result is still not the end of the story. The demands for a second referendum – “IndyRef2” – have not dwindled\, even though the opinion polls give a relatively unclear picture of what might happen in the Scottish people had a second chance. \nTo provide up-to-date background information on this question\, we have invited two guest speakers: Kirsty Hughes from the Scottish Centre on European Relations and Mark Lazarowicz\, a British lawyer who was a Labour MP in the Westminster government for many years to throw some light on the various aspects of this issue\, such as: Could there be a second referendum? What would the consequences be for the United Kingdom? Could Scotland become a member state of the European Union? \nThe online event is organized by Europe Direct Dortmund and the Anglo-German-Association in Auslandsgesellschaft.de. \nZoom-Link: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/81189433085?pwd=PKuOHeT0JnwxfJXAbgGcN9s05YWaa3.1 \nMeeting-ID: 811 8943 3085\nKenncode: 727375 (password)
