SUMMARY:Wales for Europe and European Movement in Scotland in conversation
DESCRIPTION:Wales for Europe President Anthony Slaughter\, and David Martin\,  President of The European Movement in Scotland\, in conversation about the impact of Brexit on Wales and Scotland. \nThe Brexit vote raised questions about the identity and future direction of Scotland – which strongly voted to remain in 2016. Wales voted to leave\, but as the economic impact of Brexit came to fruition\, a recent survey showed that every Welsh constituency regrets Brexit. This in turn has given rise to a strong sense of a Euro-Celtic identity for many people living in Wales and Scotland. \nAttendees will have the opportunity to take part in the discussion and ask questions. \n\nMore details and registration here. \n  \n\n

SUMMARY:EXPRESS2 Online Workshop: A future we build together 27 June\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:The EXPRESS2 project aims to develop a more inclusive\, democratic\, and sustainable new social contract for the European Union (EU). We want a social contract that strengthens democracy\, promotes justice and equality\, and protects the rights and well-being of everyone living in the EU. \nThis new Social Contract is being developed through research\, public dialogue\, and participatory engagement. A fundamental aspect in this process and in achieving this goal is engaging citizens and civil society organizations (CSOs) through a series of well-structured events and workshops. These gatherings will emphasize and discuss themes such as trust in institutions\, populism\, climate change\, digitalisation and insecurity\, which are identified as potentially disruptive elements affecting social cohesion and trust in Europe. \n\n\n\nRegister here\n\n\n\nFrom June 2025 until June 2026 the EMI\, which leads the work on citizens engagement and deliberation\, will organise a series of online and offline meetings with the key European civil society stakeholders from European and national level to craft together the input for the European Social Contract. \nIf you could choose the kind of future we live in — Would you want to retire with peace of mind?  Should every young person have access to quality education? How should AI and tech be regulated to protect people’s data and privacy\, not just profits? \nThese are the kinds of questions we will explore together. \nThrough the EU-funded EXPRESS2 project\, we’re creating a new vision for the future of Europe — one that puts people first.  Some call it a social contract. We call it a shared vision we can all stand behind. \nWe’re working with CSOs across Europe to gather real input\, on real issues — from democracy and justice to digitalisation and climate. \nYour ideas will help shape recommendations that will go directly to top EU researchers\, academics\, and decision-makers at the European Commission. \nEach workshop will focus on one big theme. They’re collaborative\, interactive\, and yes\, even fun. \nFirst up: our Introductory Workshop on June 27 from 10.00 to 12.00 CET. \n\nHear from Fabien Dell (DG EMPL)\n\n\nJoin small group discussions\n\n\nConnect with CSOs from across Europe\n\n\nBe part of shaping the process from the start\n\nThis is your chance to help write what comes next. Let’s make it count. Register here.

SUMMARY:The Role of the Council of Europe n the Pursuit of Peace\, Justice and Accountability (Dublin European Law Institute)
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, 27 February 2025\, the Dublin European Law Institute will host a conference on The Role of the Council of Europe in the Pursuit of Peace\, Justice and Accountability in Ukraine. It has been three years since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine\, a major escalation in a war that began in 2014. Though the bitter conflict still continues with much uncertainty about the future\, there is increasing international focus on how to ensure justice as well as peace in Ukraine. At the Reykjavik Summit of Heads of State and Government in May 2023\, Council of Europe Member States stressed that without accountability\, there can be no lasting peace. Furthermore\, Member States emphasised their resolve to stand united around the values of human rights\, democracy and the rule of law in face of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. \nUkraine is a key priority for the Council of Europe and much work has been done\, including the establishment of a Register of Damage and progress towards developing an International  Claims Commission. However\, many questions remain about the potential to establish a Special Tribunal for the crime of aggression\, the effectiveness of these various bodies in establishing justice\, as well as the relationship between them and the existing statutory\, judicial and other mechanisms within the Council of Europe framework\, including the European Court of Human Rights. The Conference will be an opportunity to consider all of these issues in more detail. \nView the full event programme here. \nRegister to attend. \n(Online and in person)

SUMMARY:Chicanery with Digital Immigration System in Brexit Britain (North Herts For Europe)
DESCRIPTION:Online event with Cosi Doerfel-Hill (the3million). \n“EU citizens in the UK who have been here since before 1989 and opted for getting a biometric residence permit (BRP) under the Windrush scheme instead of EUSS are now having to apply for an eVisa. They\, and the almost 4 million migrants who have been issued BRPs since 2008\, plus everyone who was given status before 2008\, will have to prove their rights to work and rent via an online system as of 1 January 2025. Even refugees who were granted asylum as recently as last month have to register online again. The Home Office is currently redrafting the code of practice and introducing penalties for not keeping the eVisa (online digital status) updated\, but it is not publicising this to anyone\, not even the grant-funded organisations helping people setting up eVisa accounts right now.” \n  \n  \nMore details and registration here.

SUMMARY:UK-EU Climate and Energy Relations (UK in a Changing Europe)
DESCRIPTION:Online event hosted by UK in a Changing Europe. \n“For both the UK and EU\, climate and energy policies are top priorities\, increasingly linked to critical questions of economic growth and security. The new Labour government wants to turn the UK into a ‘clean energy superpower’ while President von der Leyen has promised a new ‘clean industrial deal’ as part of her next Commission.   \nIn that light\, could the UK and EU do more to work together? The UK has proposed that climate and energy issues should be part of a new UK-EU security pact\, while President von der Leyen has identified energy as a priority area for closer cooperation with the UK. But how could cooperation be deepened\, and what are the risks of inaction?”\n \nSpeakers \n\nJoël Reland\, UK in a Changing Europe\nCamilla Born\, Climate policy advisor\nHeather Grabbe\, Breugel\nJill Rutter\, UK in a Changing Europe\n\nMore details and registration here.
