SUMMARY:What does Brexit mean\, and what happens next? - Sir Philip Rucroft and David Shukman
DESCRIPTION:It will be a big day in Dumfries on 27th April\, when former top civil servant Sir Philip Rycroft joins former senior BBC journalist David Shukman in conversation about the UK’s withdrawal from the EU\, what has happened since and where Scotland and the UK stand now. \nThe event is being held at Moat Brae in Dumfries\, the home of the National Centre for Children’s Literature and Storytelling. \nSir Philip Rycroft was the top civil servant in the Department for Leaving the European Union for the two years until March 2019. It was one of the most turbulent political periods the UK’s recent history. Theresa May’s government was in deep trouble with its own back benchers. Relations with the EU were under great strain and the UK’s devolved administrations shut out of negotiations. Parliament was in turmoil and Boris Johnson and his supporters were plotting to bring down the prime minister. They succeeded and Johnson became prime minister following his big general election win in December 2019. \nSir Philip\, who began his civil service career in Scotland and later held senior posts with the Scottish Government\, has recently resettled in Dumfries and Galloway. Among his duties in the final stages of his civil service career was as head of the UK Governance Group\, which led the UK’s government’s work on UK constitutional affairs and devolution. \nSir Philip will be in conversation with David Shukman. His BBC career began as a reporter in Northern Ireland. He then held senior editorial posts covering defence\, Europe\, global affairs and environment and science. He became the BBC’s first Science Editor in 2011. \nDavid Roulston\, chair of the Southwest Scotland EMiS branch says; \n“The UK is on the edge of a general election. Europe will vote in May for its parliament. America will decide its president in December and war rages in Gaza and Ukraine. It is perhaps a good time to listen to people of great experience who made and reported recent great events. It will be a fascinating discussion. \n“Moat House is famous for its association with J M Barrie\, the local man who gave the world Peter Pan. Brexit has been a disaster for the UK and delivered no tangible benefits. I am reminded of the conversation between John and Michael in Peter Pan. “Michael\, the buried treasure\, where is it.” \nRegister here. \n  \nThe event will also be broadcast on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JuAepmboBs \n

SUMMARY:More Europe Day events
DESCRIPTION:We are all looking forward to a busy couple of weeks as the excitement builds up to Europe Day – and let’s not forget the Eurovision Song Contest. \nAcross the continent our fellow Europeans will be celebrating Europe’s achievements and unity while commemorating the signing of the Schuman Declaration on the 9th of May 1950\, this ambitious plan helped secure long-term peace in post war Europe and laid the foundations for what is now the European Union. \n  \nBut lets not forget that Eurovision arose out of the same desire – a coming together of European nations after decades of war and strife. And whether you love it\, or find the music “challenging”\, the sight of so many of our young people enjoying something so quintessentially European\, means that this can be a focus for our celebrations of being part of the European family. \nHere is some of the events taking place to celebrate Scotland’s place in Europe and that we would love for you to be involved with. \n  \n\nThe Citizens Rights Project are holding on online event titled: European citizens and Scotland: their issues\, concerns & future prospects. The event takes place between 9am and 1pm and you can register here https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/european-citizens-and-scotland-their-issues-concerns-future-prospects-tickets-617708752507\n\n  \n\nMembers of Glasgow Love EU will be in attendance at the Europe Day Celebration organised by Glasgow City Council\, and we will also be hosting a Glasgow street stall in George Square between 12 and 2pm\n\n  \n\nThe RSA are hosting an online event called ‘Whats Next for Scottish Relations in Europe at 6pm. Find our more here  https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/what-next-for-scottish-relations-in-europe-tickets-622550434107\n\n  \n\nOn the 11th the European Parliament Liaison Office in the UK is hosting the Julian Priestley Memorial Lecture “What one generation does\, so the next can undo”. The main Speaker is Alistair Campbell and the event starts at 6pm. You can register to attend here https://www.europarl.europa.eu/unitedkingdom/en/eventsandexhibitions/upcoming-events/european-parliament-events-2023/priestleylecture2023.html\n\n  \n\nOn the 13th we’re encouraging everyone to get involved in their local Euro Walk. Our European themed walks are the perfect way to discover and celebrate Scotland’s historic\, and contemporary\, links with our European neighbours. Find your nearest walk here https://euromovescotland.org.uk/eurowalks/\n\n  \n\nThe 13th is also Eurovision! You can still join in the fun from home or host your own Eurovision watch party. SUMMARY:Democracy and human rights in Belarus
DESCRIPTION:Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya\, awarded the EU’s Sakharov Prize in 2020 for freedom of thought\, is widely recognised as the real winner of that year’s presidential election in Belarus – a country infamous as Europe’s last dictatorship. The election laid bare Belarusian democracy as a sham. \nIn this joint event with Edinburgh University’s Political Union we will hear from her about the ongoing brutality of Aleksandr Lukashenko’s regime and the enormity of the struggle to achieve a viable democracy. But we will also reflect and discuss the actions big and small we can take in Scotland and the U.K. to show our solidarity with the movement for democracy in Belarus. \nNote: This event will now take place in the Quaker Meeting House on Victoria Street \nMore details and registration here.
